Gas Milage??????

Hey, I have a 1965 Ford F-250 4x4 with a I6 300. I'm not quite sure what the gas milage is on it but I'm thinking about upgrading to a 352 because that was made in the same era. My truck has lockouts so that helps a little on gas but it can get "good" gas milage no matter what i do. But i was wondering if anyone knows how much of a difference the gas milage would be between these two engines. I don't want to get a engine that gets 5 mpg but it doesn't have to be high either. Any help will be appreciated. Thanx

Gas Milage??????

The I6 300 is a good low end torque motor, but the FE engine is makes excellent torque and revs higher than the I6. I've heard of getting 12+ from an FE, but I think most get about 10mpg.

The FE is a great engine for a truck, but I think you should consider a 390. The 390 can offer unreal torque at low-mid rpm range and can still rev into the 5500 range without many mods.

I'd get a 390 with zero deck and do the standard FE oiling mods, use a HV oil pump and add headers because the stock FE exhaust is a poor design. A good dual pattern cam and a little port work on the heads really wake these things up if your into that.

As far as the conversion, you'll need a new bellhousing for a stick or a new tranny if auto. The C6 is an excellent choice for an auto and the NP435 is an excellent choice for the stick.

You'll need the motor mount purches from the frame to the motor, but these should be easy to find. I'd also look at getting a larger rad, these are easy to find too.

The nice thing about the 390, is that you can get the same mpg as a 352 or 360 but you get more low end torque so the engine isn't working as hard when your pulling or going up hill.

The down side is that the FE is not the cheapest engine to build, but there is good aftermarket support and it's one tough engine.
