ok, so here's the problem. my back tank in my '96 F-150 has been bad for years, now my front one is leaking. I bought a new front tank, and I'm trying to put it in. I cut the straps, messed with the filler neck and disconnedted the wiring to the sending unit/fuel pump. I now have the tank on the ground, but I can't for the life of me get the darned fuel lines off the sending unit. I did crank the truck to nix the fuel pressure. I have the stupid tool to put in the line, and have sucessfully wrestled off the fuel filter before. I thought maybe the tool wasn't getting in there deep enough (was as deep as it would go), so I bought another deeper one, but that didn't work either. I'm at the point now where I'm thinking of cutting the line. If I cut the steel line, I could put it back together with a compression union right?
as a side note, when I had the battery hooked up, but the sending unit/fuel pump disconnected, all the taillights where on for no apparent reason. Is this normal or is my truck now posessed? Thanks guys!
I need to change both tanks in my 95 as well. What is the tool you are referring to? I better get that before I start. Sorry to semi hijack your thread GB.
Try spraying some brake cleaner inside the fuel line connection.. clean it out and keep trying. Also make sure the tank isn't hanging by the fuel lines... I found them easier to disconnect when there wasn't any tension on the fitting.
i just did that job 2 weeks ago so i know exactly how you feel. i had a really hard time getting those lines off the pump too. there were two lines connected to my pump and they were different. one was blue and had 3 large tabs holding it on and the other one was black and had 5 smaller tabs holding it on. they were both tough to get off but the blue one was harder. just make sure that tool you're shoving up there disengages all the tabs and of course make sure you're using the right size tool. mine is just a set of crappy plastic rings that you slide over the line and shove up into the connection. i learned how to use this when i ran into this problem changing the fuel filter. i couldnt get that blue 3 tabbed line off so i asked my dad and he got it off by pulling harder than i did. sorry about the rambling but i just did this so its still fresh in my mind...
In summary: make sure all the tabs are disengaged and pull really hard!
