Hey,
I've got a 2000 F150 1/2 ton,Ext Cab.
And I've got problems with the tail gate not opening right.
You can be setting on flat ground and try to open the tail gate and the darn thing just will not open.
Acts like the tail gate is locked.
One time I took off the plate with the star nuts and put some WD-40 all over the latch.
Is there something better that I can do to fix it?
Sure is hell not to open the tail gate when you have the bed loaded with stuff.
When it wouldn't open I tried the keey several times back and forth then it open.
But I never locked it,in the first place.
Thanks
mine on my 01 does the same thing I usually just unlock it and it opens. I just figured when I slam it shut it must jar the lock enough to set it? It is annoying though I will give you that. not sure why there is even a lock on it. its a truck lol.
Mine does the same thing. It has done it since I bought it 3 years ago. Did the WD-40 help for awhile. If it did use a good silicone lubricant. WD-40 is a penetrant and will dry it out as it evaporates. It is a great penetrant but not a lube. I have been meaning to take mine apart since I got it, but havn,t found time. I guess it doesn't bug me that much, LOL. good luck
Hey
I took the plate off,the back side of the tail gate.
Found out that, the problem was in the lock.
The darn thing, lock all by it's self, and not unlock.
As you are looking at the tailgate, with the plate off.
You will see a small, plastic arm,to the right side.
It's got a ribbit that moves up and down, moving the arm.
If you move the arm to the back of the truck, this locks the tailgate.
Move the arm down, then this is makes the tailgate unlock.
What I did was just wire the Arm in the unlock, down spot.
I can't lock the tailgate, but who cares,at least I can open the tailgate now.

Well I pulled the cover off mine and all it needed was lubing. I guess I was lucky. I just sprayed LPS on everything and it works great now. Good luck.
theres a lock so if you have a cap you have a secure area, also so no one steals them...i had my spare tire stolen that pissed me off but if i got the tailgate stolen i really would have been seeing red....i like the idea....
The lock on the tailgate helps theft, like if you have a 4wheeler in the back 1 or 2 guys could unload it if they got the tailgate open, but if its locked i dont see 1 or 2 guys lifting at least 400lbs over the tailgate.
As for people stealing tailgates, i read that if you put a hose clamp on the end that comes off, you cant get it off without taking off the hose clamp. Which could be a pain if you put the hose clamp on, then spun the hose clamp around where you cant put a screwdriver on the head.
If the tailgate is down is the handle easy to pull as if you were going to open it? If so I have the same problem, the posts (due to lack of technical terms) that the tailgate locks onto, "should have a star head" they adjust up/down/left/right yadda yadda. I was told if they arent just right it will bind the tailgate when its closed and be a bear to open. Me personally I haven't fixed mine yet because everytime i fix something, something else breaks like now its sitting in the garage with a shot alternator and this happened because i got a raise at work aint that how it goes? Hope this helps, let us know
