I have a 330 HD (ft/fe block) in a 65 L-series. The 2bbl carb is dead. I need to know what other carbs will bolt on in place of this one or could I use the baseplate from this carb on just a plain old holley 2bbl off of say a 272/292?
Did holley make that carb with a vacum port for the brake booster? If so what did it come on?
my uncle (who sold me the thing) says he tried bolting one directly on without a port but couldnt drive it because of the brake booster. (brakes? I dont neeeed no steeenking brakes!!)
Also is it possible(or wise) to just remove the booster and bolt the master cylinder straight to the firewall.
Sorry I got carried away.
THanks Everyone for the responses I have received on another post already. I thought I knew ford inside out but these obscure hard to find at the local autoparts store stuff is driving me up the wall.
It depends on the master cyl, if it fit, you can by pass the booster but make sure the rod is the correct length. Most rods have a slight adjustment, so you might be able to make it work.
I connect mine directly to the intake above one of the runners and it works great. You can get a base plate that has an hole for power brakes or just connect it straight to the intake, if it changes the performance of the engine, something might be wrong with the booster. Booster tend to develop leaks over time as the rubber wears out, I'd check into replacing the booster as it really helps stopping power.
My F600 330 FE is from a 76, so it may be a bit different. Also, mine runs on propane so I do not have a carb, just a mixer otherwise I would take a look at what carb it has on it. I will double check this weekend, but I think that the vacuum line for the booster feeds from the manifold directly as I do not think that the mixer has any vacuum ports. It may be possible to remove the booster, but unless you are replacing it, I would think that it would be unwise especially if you will be driving on public roads. These trucks are heavy and need all the help they can get to stop. I would hate to think of the consequences if you were to get into an accident and it was found that you had disabled the brakes...... the lawyers would have a hayday.
As for what other carbs would fit..... I guess you would need to measure the spread of the mounting bolts and then ask around. I kind of doubt that the basic carb design is just specific to a 330 as it just doesn't seem to be what they would do in 65. I suspect it is just a modified version of a more common 2 bbl. I do have some Holley reference books, they are not great but if you post any numbers I will see if anything shows.
I beleive that any of the Holley or Autolite/Motorcraft 2 BBLs will fit. A quick check using your old gasket on the bottom of the new carb will answer that. Linkage may take a few minutes to get to work.
As for the vacuum line you may be able to find an emissions/PVC adapter plate that goes beteen the carb and manifold to do what you need.
I sure wouldn't drive it without the brake booster working correctly.
I just pulled a newer Holley 2 barrel off of my 69' 390 as I have replaced the intake and carb. 390 was previously stock. It was a good running 2 barrel as recent as July. I'd be willing to sell it pretty cheap if you could use it. Too many parts in my shop.
