Mine is right before the carb. This in my opinion would be the best location. If by some crazy chance your fuel pump starts shaving metal this would stop it from trashing your carb. One before and after the pump wouldn't even be a bad idea as long as you get enough fuel. For a stock engine this shouldn't be a problem.
My '70 has a filter has a filter at the pump and again at the carb. My '78 has three filters. One before the pump, one at the pump, and one at the carb.

I think it's best to have one before the pump to keep stuff from damaging the pump. I think the pump itself is just a rubber diaphram and might be dammaged by stuff from the tank.
