Could someone list me the head casting #'s and the specs of the heads? Also, what block casting #'s should I look for to make sure it is a 390? I know that this is a wide question, but I do not know anything about the 390 engines. Here is the deal....I am getting a 390 for $150 to put into a Cobra kit car and I need to know if it is worth the money or just a waste of time. I am having to travel about an hour and half and would like to have some idea to know if the engine is worth the money or not.
Many Thanks,
Von
Look for the head castings that start with C1AE C4AE or C6AE they will likely have the taller ports which I've heard can outflow the CJ heads when done right. the only way to tell whether it's a 352 or 390 from the outside is there is a crank notch or groove type thing, which I'm not sure of, but the best way is to just crank the engine over with a spark plug out and a small wood dowel in the cylinder, mark it at the top of the stroke and the bottom if it's 3 3/4" it's a 390 if it's 3 1/2" it's a 352.
Von, the casting #s alone won't tell you if it is a 352/360 or a 390. The same casting # is used on many blocks. If you can see the back of the crankshaft the 3 1/2 inch 352/360 cranks have a half round notch in the flange and the 3.78 390 crank has a rectangular notch. DF
Von,
I would recomend you use the dowel in the sparkplug hole
method to determine the stroke.I have a 360 crank and a 390/427 crank(c4ae-b)that display the half moon on the flange end.
