automatic to manual changeover

automatic to manual changeover
Hi, I have a 2001 f250 with 7.3 4x4 automatic. Well, two weeks after buying the truck, I loose reverse. I know it is the clutch due to the way it went out, however, I have been advised that the whole tranny should be redone. If I'm getting into that kind of money, can I just change for a manual transmission using parts from the local junk yard? How hard would it be?

there are many posts about this same subject, Kris(strokinit 7.3) wanted one so bad that he was ready to drive to another members house and do the swap in the driveway. Unfortunatley, there is much more involved than just swapping trannys and cutting a hole in the floor for the handshaker. He will be along soon and let you know what you are up against. But just a hint, he ended up driving to BTS and had his auto done right, due to all the other things that would have have been involved.

A built 4R100 (your trans) will be stronger than a stock manual anyway, from what I've seen. Don't know how our manuals compares to a NV4500, but my buddy with a Cummins trashed his NV pretty quickly when he started modding his engine. My stock 4R100 lasted about 50K after I started on my motor. He may have more power, but not that much more, and I pull a lot. His egt's keep him from really abusing it the way I can.

I would go for a BTS built auto. I love my stick most of the time but there are times that I hate it. For example, this past Sunday night 9PM, bumper to bumper traffic for 45 min and I was really hung over. At that point I was ready to let my tuck go in a fire sale. With the manual my girl cant drive the truck so that means I have to do all the driving all the time. Also if you plan on moding and wanting to do lots of go fast parts then the manual is going to slow you down off the line. Lastly, it will cost you LOTS of money and time to do that swap.
