(Well Ken can kill the other post. I hit enter instead of tab.)
I have a 427 block that's .030 over and a 428 crank; that gives me a 454. I don't have any pistons and was wondering what pistons might work that would let me offset grind my crank and give me a few more cubic inches. (I like cubic inches 'cause I learn years ago that the only substitute for cubic inches is cubic money!)
I would prefer not to buy custom pistons but do expect to have to cut notches for the valves.
Ross makes pistons just for this application. You might have to shave the tops of the pistons shaved if you offset grind the crank. Scat is making a 4.125" crank for FE's now. You can buy a whole stroker kit from http://www.flatlanderracing.com . They also sell kits to make a 800 cu. in. 460.
Bob, you might want to save your pennies and have a custom set made, JE offers some really nice ones. If you ran the 428 crank without any funny grinding, the normal 427 pin height pistons 1.75, can safely be cut to 1.65 428 pin height if you start with TRW forgings. If you offset grind for 4.125 stoke and use 351M/400 rods you would need pistons about 1.53 tall, which would have to be specially made. Is your block bored yet ? If not, don't go 030 over. The 427 cylinder walls are too thin to take out any more than absolutely needed. If you went .017 over, you would be @ 4.250, the normal bore of a 454 chevy. If memory serves me correctly, a 454 chevy piston has a 1.65 pin height, maybe you could cut some new valve notches in a set of those, and cut them to the pin height you need .....? DF
I think the block was already .030 over when I got it twenty years ago. I guess I need to check that out. I'm tried of having this really neat project pending and am going to get it going. I will have to decide what to put it in but that's another post.
Never mind. They say that your memeory is the second thing to go and I forget what the first thing is.
I discovered I have a set of LeMans rods I'd forgotten about and some domed TRW pistons . Probably somewhere around 12.5 to 1. Guess the compression will make up for a stock 3.98 stroke.
