428 engine

I have a '71 ford f250 with a 360 engine. Seeing as how I have to rebuild the engine to make it run, I've been considering getting a 390 or 428 engine to rebuild instead, so I can get more horse power and use the same intake and carb. Does anyone know where I should look for a 428, and is this a rare engine? Suggestions, comments?

the 428 is kinda scarce but still available, it's better than a 390 for a 4x4 because it was made for torque, but a 390 will work just fine too

I don't mean to discourage, but 428's are very rare these days and are priced at about $1000 for one in need of a rebuild. If that's not an issue, look in '66-'69 full size fords and wagons, also Mercs.

I agree with Chilly. The 428 is a downright hard engine to find. Came in Galaxies/Fairlanes/etc. As mentioned in below post, you can make a 428 out of a 390, but it wouldn't be worth the effort unless you were completely sure of your block. IMHO, take a 390, fill it full of goodies, get her balanced and have fun. My grandpa always told me stories of his balanced 390HP in his '62 Fairlane that would blow the doors off GTO/Camaro/Mustangs and anyone else that thought they could take his sleeper rod. He even liked it better than the 428 he had. Of course, it's your truck, and admittedly, it would be cool to say, "yeah, she's got a 428 in her." Up to you though.

428’s used to be fairly common in the wrecking yards but not anymore. When you think you’ve found one, check the stroke to verify it’s not really a replacement 390. Don’t rely on casting numbers only, it will just get you in trouble with these blocks. Also check the bore wear as the cylinder walls are fairly thin and can only be safely bored .030” over before they need to be sleeved. If it’s all good, make sure you get the flexplate or flywheel too as these engines are externally balanced. If the block is junk but the crank and rods are ok, you could drop them in your 360 and make a 410 out of it, always thought the 410 would be a great truck motor. You say you are going to use the same intake and carb. from the 360, I assume they are aftermarket items as the stock equipment is rather anemic in the breathing department. Good luck and happy hunting!

Look to any of the engine wholesale companies.
(PAW,etc.)Find a FE crank for a 410 or 428 the stroke is the same.Your looking for torque and stroke is the answer, just clean up your bore if needed and motor on...Dave.

I had the same question last week for putting a 428 in my '63 unibody. The only place I could find that advertised 428s was in hemmings motor news. you can find it on hemmings.com by doing a search for engines. I don't know if the engines were rebuilds or not but they were asking around $3,000 to $4,000. One ad had a 68 long block for $1850. The ads seemed to be mostly in California.

A 360 is a de-stroked 390. Same block, same bore.

Brent. The "Airline" T-Birds had mild 428's in them too and they are a resource for these engines that often gets overlooked. They are the ones with the long Edsel type snout on them. The added plus is that the "Airline" birds don't seem to be real popular with restorers and thus are more available than those before about 66-67. Hope this helps.
Good luck.

Well if you've finished rebuilding and installing and everything..forget it- but I have a 1969 F100 4x4 longbed that had a 428 Police Intercepter in it. I'm going to have to get rid of it and was going to sell the engine and truck separately. Oh yeah,...........and I live in Arizona.

I debated that myself. Replace my 360 with a 428, or rebuild it as a 410? I found that 428 crankshafts are easy to find, though going prices through classifieds, ebay, etc. seem to be $300-500. I shopped around and spent $275 for a .010/.010 1U 428 crank and a matched set of rods. Complete 428 motors are available, but I wasn't able to find one for less than $1500. In comparison, 390's are plentiful. I decided to save the money and build a 410, instead.

There is that set of 428 Cobra Jet heads on ebay right now, though, and a 428 Cobra Jet in my F100 sounds really cool....
