Flames out exhaust

Theres only one thing i dont want them. My truck has been running smooth and it still seems like its running good, but tonight it was warm and then i reved it up and saw about a 4" long flame come from one of the pipes. What would be a reason for this and how easy or hard would it be to get rid of

sounds like youre ignition timing is too late, combustion is still taking place on the exhaust valve opening event and the charge is rushing out to your exhaust pipe tips still burning, maybe the distributor hold down bolt came loose, mine does every now and then and I have the same problem. Make sure to fix it or the exhaust manifolds or headers will become extremely hot and make engine bay temperatures extreme. if you had a very mufflered exhaust it would most likely not happen, you must have a very open exhaust. Just my opinion, there are however a few more unlikely things that can cause it, is it on deceleration only in the form of backfires, or is it on acceleration and a constant flame, if it is constant, than it is the timing like I said, if it backfires, it is most likely a vaccuum leak, or lean idle mixture. hope this helps.

ok, if it does it cold, than it is running lean, choke?, if it runs fine when warm, than there is nothing to worry about, engines need more fuel when cold. check choke operation and use it if need be.
