It makes a cracking noise
My '94 2wd did that for two years and drove me NUTS. I looked and looked for it because it was intermittent (and got louder and louder) and I couldn't make it do it so I couldn't find it. It finally got to where I could make it do it by sitting still and turning the wheel side to side. (Did I mention TWO YEARS?) I got under it and felt around and it was the transmission crossmember where it boltd to the frame on the right side. I had already tightened everthing under there, but that didn't help. I removed the brace that goes from the end of the crossmember up to the top of the frame and it went away. Maybe the 4wd is the same.
So today I drove down by my buddy and we took the truck for a short drive, listening for the sound and where it could be coming from. We got back to his house, we went got under the truck by the rear end because we decided to start checking back there. I had the urge to touch the drum and it was scorching hot. I didn't think of anything of it, but the guy told me that after that short of a drive it shouldn't be hot at all. Then we moved the truck back and forth listening to the rear driver side wheel. We heard a miny version of the clunking and the squeaking that had just come into play a couple of weeks ago. Now we finally know where the noise(s) are coming from. I do have one question though. Do I have the semi- or full-floating axleshafts in the 3,750 lb. 8.8" rear axle? Tapered or not? Or, am I going to have to find out this info when everything is tore apart?

I put a wheel bearing in my 2wd. Had to borrow a slide puller from Advance Auto. It has the fitting to reach in and grab the bearing and bang it out. You have to put down the $100 cost of the puller set to borrow it, and I liked it so much I kept it, which is OK with them. You have to take off the rear end cover, take out the spider gear shaft bolt, the shaft and the spider gears to push the axle in and take out the c-clip to slide the axle out. Its messy, but not a big deal. Usually a bad bearing is on the passenger side. Get the drum off by reaching in the bottom slot of the brake backing plate with a screwdriver and work the adjuster wheel (up with the screwdriver or adjusting tool fo rth ewheel to go in). Then, if the drum is stuck, you may have to put a lug nut back on without the wheel to contain the drum, crank it up on jackstands, put it in drive and reverse and bang the brake pedal to loosen the drum.
I finally got around to fixing the bad wheel bearing, and ran into an even larger problem. Where the bearing sits on the axle shaft, its worn down way too far for a new bearing to sit. So now I begin my search for an axle shaft already out of the axle, if I can get so lucky. Otherwise its to the junkyard for me.
another thought based on some problems I have had over the years is a brake pad sticking. You said that you did not have a working e-brake with a broken cable and that might have allowed something to move where it shouldn't and cause a slight bit of brake drag. This would explain the hot drum
I would really like to know whatyour issue was when you find out. I am having the same thing, clunking felt under my feet in the floor board. I also have checked everything I can touch, pulled the front wheels off and checked everything. I did discover something today... there is a rubber piece and bracket between a crossmember under the tranny. The two bolts were loose, and I tightened them up. I will know tommorrow while driving if this made any difference.

My problem was a bad wheel bearing in the rear driver side. But now I am having a new set of problems with four wheel drive in the front axles and hubs. I'm going to wait until spring though, its way too cold to be tearing all this stuff apart and all that joy.
On my drive todat I still have the vibration/clunck ubder my feet. I inspected both radius arm insulators and they seem very tight with a pry bar. Is there any way to maybe shim them to see if the noise goes away?
