my door sticker says trans code U which is mercon5 right? the dip stick says use MERCON . it got a 13 or 14 bolt pan I think. I'm about to get it flushed so I want to make sure they use the right stuff.. any ideas????
do you want to argue about flushing it? a lot of people will tell you not to for fear of dislodging something and breaking your tranny.
i talked to ford about it and they said if the tranny is well maintained (fluid changed) and under 100k miles, they will flush it, but then they laughed when i asked them "what if my tranny breaks 500 miles later". he just shrugged his shoulders and said "sorry". thats y i went with just a drain/fill, not flush.
Tom's not just whistlin' dixie, it's normally a bad idea to flush a high mileage transmission if it hasn't been getting flushes regularly all its life. If you're not sure what has happened to the transmission in the past then it is usually a good idea to just drain and fill. Although IIRC, that 4r70w doesn't have a drain plug on the torque converter...
well its a 1996 got 160 thousand and its starting to shudder.... I'm in the shop now they are flushin..... so lets hope for the best..... if it blows up maybe I will swap in a manual
if the trans fluid is NICE and clean under 100K, flush it.
This dislodge idea is rummor really....yes it can break the debris out of the cooler lines and whatnot, but we would hope the flush machine sucks that out.
The issue is that when the clutches get gummy with the particulates and old grimmy fluid....often NEW thin clean fluid flushed inside will take away that little upperhand it had at grabbing in the clutch packs.
EIther way, I suggest normal trans service with this technique.
disconect trans OUT line to dump bucket, start and let it pump fluid out. Drop pan and service as normal. Save the flush for those ricers and hard to work on cars.
Also, i suggest a fluid service no matter what.....the trans might die in a month, but hey, it was dieing anyway.
before they put in the new fluid they ran some kinda cleaner through it to clean out all the crap........ normally I would do this myself. but my other car died and need a ride to work asap.... looks like the fluid comin out is a lot darker than the fluid goin in.. so that's a good thing..
ok I got the truck and was driving home, for about 3 miles still had the shudder... kept driving and it slowly went away... so I guess I'm good for now..... question is, if it comes back, is it time to replace the T.C. or do I need to rebuild the entire trans... the manual transmission shoud bolt right to the engine right? would I need a new computer?
thanks folks
you have the greatest 4speed Ford has, so work on keeping it IMO
Mercon has a slip additive that helps prevent shudder...you filled it up and it worked its way into the TC, all is good now.
If it shows up again, diagnose it then. Last resort being TC replace. Often a new TCC solenoid or even slight improvments in the TCC signal with VB mods can improve it for cheap to free.
Try this stuff called, 'Smart Blend" for the shudder. There are 3 types of Smart Blend, red, blue and black. Mainly made for different tranny's, and the fords use the red. All the colors refer to is the color of the bottle its in..B
But to get back to your porblem.. My aunts 97 t-bird was shuttering, and I did a drain and refill and added red smart blend. The shutter went away for abotu 6 months, and did another service and added a bottle of smart blend. Been 3 years without a problem...
And going to do the same on my 94 F-150 I bought bout a month ago..
