Transmission fluid

Which fluid for a 01 7.3 ltd 4x4? I have had 1 mechanic say mercon/dextron, another says Mercon 5 only. The owners manuel says Mercon. What are you guys running?

Mercron V (5) for me. The transfer case is about 3 qts of Mercron V as well. There is a good link out there if someone has it (I cant find it) on a DIY flush that is very through

Mercon was the original spec fluid, but Ford released a TSB saying to stop using Mercon and now use Mercon V in all Mercon applications. They have stopped regulating the production of Mercon, so when you buy Mercon you are trusting the oil manufacturer that it is up to spec.

A better question would be, "What should I run."

Merc V is what Ford recommends for the 4R100. It's been reformulated to meet the specs Ford requires for the trans. Dex 3/Merc is no longer certified by Ford or GM.
