What head Casting # to look for?

Since there is nothing wrong with my heads right now I was thinking of using them for now and look through the junkyards for a set of heads to have rebuilt. What are the best castings to get? I have been told that the heads don't need hardened valve seats because they are tempered from the heat and they just need a 3 angle valve job. Is this true? Thanks Eric

Eric, in my opinion the exhaust seats don't matter because you should cut them out and replace them to change over to the 1.65 CJ exhaust valve. Other than CJ and LR heads, all the heads you find in a salvge yard are going to have the little exhaust valves. I like the D2TE-AA heads cause they are easy to find, usually are not cracked, and have plenty of meat in them for port and seat work. I match them to a MR intake gasket ( felpro #1247) and am happy with them. On the exhaust, I put in hard seats with 1.75 O.D. and open the bowls up under the seat to 1 1/2 in for a 1/2 in deep from the valve seat, then blend in. Never broke through to the water. If you like the CJ ports, some guys have real good luck with C4AE-G heads, look at old galaxies, thats where they will be found. DF

What head Casting # to look for?

Hi dino;
I have a 1965 F100 Custom Cab:
http://profiles.yahoo.com/bjworline
It has a 352 with 15000 miles on it,
What results would I get by replacing the 352 heads; with a set of rebuilt (5000 miles) 390 heads? With hardened vaulve seats. Are they the same? Can I do this? I know their is a .050 diference in the bore.
Their is too much life left in this engine to consider a rebuild at this point. It runs fine, and the vaulves look great except for excessive carbon build up on the upper portion of the head (springs) as well as the valley area. Not sure they have hardened vaulve seats. Also very little carbon on the pistons. Ridge is only about .002-.003 max.
Eventually I will rebuild the 352 heads; I just want too get it back on the road at this point. Any idea what would cause this excessive carbon buildup?

Treasure, get some D2TE-AA heads from a 75 or 76 390 or 360, they will have induction hardened seats under the exhuast. Then you can build the heads you have now as I have described above. As for the carbon, is your carb running kinda fat ? DF

C6AE-R Found on '66 352's. Essentially the same as 428CJ heads with the exception of valve sizes.
