2002 Expedition EB Alternator Replacement

Greetings All,
I was planning to replace my alternator but not sure how to release tension off the serpentine belt. Is there a special tool required to relieve tensioner? Any thoughts on pitfalls to look out for???

Many Thanks,
geov

The tensioner should have a square (3/8 or 1/2) hole in the pulley end for belt removal.

It is an easy job to do, you just need a long handled 1/2" ratchet or breaker bar.

Use a screwdriver to pry the belt back on and dont forget the breaker bar is still attached when your done and drive with it like I did.... luckily it stayed put!

Thanks Folks.
I bought a reconditioned alternator from Pep Boys. For the tensioner tool, Pep Boys has a Tool Loaner program where you buy the tool and then return it. I did this with the tensioner tool and adapters. Worked well.

Good input on removing the tensioner wrench before starting the car.....I almost made that mistake even though I read not to do it in your note.

Total cost for refurb alternator after core exchange and returning the tensioner wrench was about $150 (including tax) and a couple of busted knuckles. Only down side is that now my drive belt sqweeks -- I figure some belt dressing will do the trick....

How old is the belt? Maybe time for a new one.

Belt is original with 88K miles on it. If I recall correctly, the owner's manual recommends changing it out at 60K or so. Visual inspection looked ok and it wasn't sqweeking before the alternator so I figured it was ok......

Replace the belt. I had a great experience with 'dressing' a belt, instead of replacing it. Within 30 days, 40 miles from home, it snapped. Not worth it, at that many miles.

Thanks for the information on releasing the belt tensioner. Just did the alternator yesterday. It was the first time I've taken off the belt and I was a bit stumped at first but the forums came through for me. I used a breaker bar that Auto Zone has for just this purpose (purchase with them knowing you'll return).
