My 85 150 tailgate is in need of a new tailgate applique(alumn trim)I have found the newer model ,but I do not like the way ford is spelled in the graphics on the newer trucks.Anyone know of somewhere besides just getting lucky in a salvage yard that I can get one?
That seems like a hot item for these trucks. On ebay found two $149 and $344. May I suggest a piece of flat aluminum or diamond plate and choose your favorite Ford logo style to add on. They are out there just expensive. I doubt a junk yard will keep a nice one around for you.
Good luck with that aluminum tailgate finish panel, chief.
That is one of those parts that I b!tch about in here. For some reason, aftermarket part suppliers skip right on by the '85-'86 trim specific parts. I have been trying for FOUR YEARS to find the '85-'86 XLT Larait UPPER trim moulding (adhesive) that runs the length of these trucks, but have been unsuccessful, including ebay. Manufacturers make tailgate trim panels for model year groups '80-'84, and then '87-'91 and finally the '92-'96, while completely ignoring the '85-'86 specific model year. Trust me, I have checked EVERYWHERE. The only place you might find one at this point in time is ebay.
I also agree with you, the lettering on the newer panels don't look as good. The newer aluminum panels wouldn't fit anyway. The tailgate design changed on the '87-'96 model trucks. If you look closely, the aluminum trim on our '85-'86 has a slot cut out for the tailgate handle. The newer ones don't have this slot because the tailgate handle is mounted up higher on the tailgate.
I have one that I've considered selling so many times, but i just keep holding onto it sinc ethe more i look at it, the more i like it and the more i think i'm going to put it back on the truck.
Never realized these things were so hard to come by.
i actually took it off of the truck since the PO mounted the bumper too high and when the tailgate was open the "F" sat on the bumper and actually rubbed a bit of the chrome off. It's probably going back on once i get the ambition to lower the bumper.
