289 heads on 302 question

I bought me a set of 1965 289 heads to put on my 1969 302. I went today to get some valves for it and I didnt know what size I needed. Anyone know what I need? also what pushrods should I get? I also got my a 4 barrel intake for 20 bucks off this guy....

Intake valve size: 1.78".
Exhaust valve size: 1.45".

These are stock 1965 289 valve sizes. Purchase valves and pushrods to suit 1965 289 engine.

What rockers are you using........it makes a big difference in the valves you need. If you are using the early rail type then you need the longer tipped valves. all depends on the rockers.

The 289 heads use close tolerance rectangular slots broached into the head to guide the pushrods, and thence the rocker arms. The 302 heads use "rail" rocker arms to use the valve tips to guide the rocker arms. Installing the 302 rocker arms on the 289 heads will cause both of these guide systems to try to locate the rocker arms. Since they will almost certainly not be trying to guide the rocker arm in the same precise spot, stresses will develop which will result in excessive side loads on the pushrods and valve stems.

So it's probably not a good idea to install "rail" type rocker arms on the 289 heads. Use the stock rocker arms.

Buy rocker arms and pushrods for the 65 289. They might also be listed for 1968 302s, as Ford switched to rail style in 69 I believe. You might be able to get good used stock rocker arms cheap for the 289 from an auto machine shop. They are quite durable pieces and the tips can be dressed on a valve facing machine if needed. Did your heads come without them?
If you are converting to aftermarket non-stock items, you will have to ask the seller which parts are compatible.

The 4V intake sounds like a very good deal!

if you are using the 289 heads you should use the rockers and valves for that. I think the 302 had rail type rockers which do not require any type of guide because it's built into the rocker like Beanscoot said. the 289 has the slotted pushrod hole and the shorter valve tip....the 302 has the open hole and longer valve tip. like these....

ya the 302 heads i have the valves have little caps on them where the rocker arm pushes down at... I cant remember if the 302 i got is a 68 or 69..so ill try to get a picture of the rocker arms I got on the 302... I did have rocker arms for the 289 but they got pitched because i assumed the 302 rocker arms were the same... Are the lenghts of the pushrods different?

they might be different, I don't know for sure but there was a shorter pushrod for something. I would use the 302 pushrods. just make sure you check the preload on the lifter when you tigthen the rockers down, should have about a 1/2 turn on them.
