thanx D.F, two votes on the pump, I think I will run with the high vol.
I havn't checked the heads as far as condition, if need be I"ll buy a newly rebuilt pair, the motor was rebuilt once by the guy I bought it from,(he had a shop do it), so I will see, maybe some or all of it has been done as far as the seats, etc. I bolted the engine back together, I just wanted to know condition of the block and confirm C.I.D, when it comes down to building it I will just have to play stuff like that by ear, I talked to the owner of a cyl. head rebuild shop, his only vehicles are 3 ford trucks with 390's, He loves em, so I think he will be a good place to have the work done, But I will definately ask about the cobra size valves.
thanx,
Justin
I wish I could say more about the cam, but I've only put about 80 miles on it. The first engine failed because of bad rods from PAW and the new engine only has about 30 miles on it when I decided to do a frame off restore so it's all in parts right now getting ready for paint.
When I did drive it, the low end was unreal. The first build that failed seemed to cut out about 4500, then I port matched the intake (streetmaster 390 single plane) and it really made a difference. Without dialing everything in, I'd be in 2nd gear @ 10mph or so and hit it, the tires smoked at will with no problem (33" x 12.5" 410 gears)
the < 3500 rpm response was just unreal. The sound at 600~1000 idle was real powerful too, you could tell the engine wasn't stock!
thanx Karljay, I like the results on the desktop dyno, and your experiences with the cam, I think I will run with it. I will make that cam my choice. I am unfamiliar with Crower however, how are they compared to like crane, etc. as far as quality?
thanx
Justin
I wouldn't worry about quality between the two either way. I have never owned a crower cam but have heard nothing but good news about them. I would shoot for a cam from either companies that best suits your needs. Crower does seem to have good deals on cam/lifter/spring/retainer sets.
