4.9l Enigine Tick

Hello, this is my first thread on this site.
I own a 1996 f150, with 130,000 miles, 5spd trans, 4.9L.
I have a very loud tick noise coming from the rear of the engine, both when cold and hot. Only under load, when idling it is fine, put the petal down and it is loud. The noise does not match the rpm of the motor but it does increase in speed as engine revs, it is a consistand tick however, evenly spaced. It sounds like an ehaust leak at the manifold, however while enigne was cold i sprayed exhaust with soapy water to see if it leaked. I have even changed the intake and exhaust manifold gaskets, still the same ticking noise persists. When i pull #6 sparkplug wire off the noise goes away, i have checked compression and all cylinders are at 150psi, i have pulled the valve cover off to inspect the lifters and no apparent damage. Any tips will help, I am soon in need of my truck, i am putting my 98 svt mustang cobra away for the winter. Thanx. Ryan....

Same truck, same problem here.

Ford dealer told me cracked manifold.
An exhaust shop told me it was the exhaust recicrulation runner that goes into the top of the head.

I haven't cared enough to figure out what it actually is, other than it seems like it willl cost more than the truck is worth to fix.

You have a check engine light?

If it stops when you take off the #6 plug wire it has to do with that cylinder. If you have an exhuast leak it will be black around it. Unless it has just started. You can try to take the valve cover off and see if holding the rocker down will stop the ticking. Does it sound metallic?

I took a closer look around the head to see if i could see any signs of carbon, i noticed a white, and dark black carbon on a fitting that screws into the head just above the injectors. It runs to a header that looks like an emissions setup...
Then heads straight into my air pump. Does this sound right? And would there be enough pressure to make that noise?

That description sounds like the air line from the pump into the head which would be for pre-heat of the front cat. After warming to operating temperature, the pump will switch to the pipe that goes into the exhaust between the cats. When not needed, the air pump simply dumps to atmosphere through a small muffler.

To answer your quest, yes, there could be enough exhaust pressure there to make a noise. Pretty much the same as an exhaust manifold leak. There should be a check valve somewhere near where the line comes out of the head to prevent hot exhaust from going back to the air pump.

thankyou "old_paint" for that information, sounds as tho that is the area that is leaking, what is that part called? It doesnt look like i may be able to just tighten the fitting unfortunately, looks alittle siezed into the head. Im soaking it with penetrating oils so I can remove it without damaging the head. Sounds like a special order part from the dealer. The truck is definately worth the little money to replace what is needed.
I appreciate all of the help from all of those who have replied. Thankyou.
