I used main studs for my 390 because they were the same price and they are stronger so I figured why not? I had the block line honed with the studs also. Went to put the original 428CJ windage tray and oil pan on the other day and noticed the number 5 main studs won't allow this to happen. I have been told by some to grind the studs & nuts and told by others to replace them with the original ford bolts. Not real crazy about grinding the studs and nuts. I am also not worried about the stock bolts breaking, but I am worried about the stock bolts throwing off the line bore. Any ideas. It's always the little things that get ya!
Rat, this one is easy. you can either dimple the tray with a ball peen hammer, or if you need more room, use a hole saw and cut some holes in the tray where the studs hit. DF

I don't think I could beat a big enough dent in the pan to clear them without going through it. The actual gasket surface of the pan is stopping it from going on. I have been told that most people cut the part of the cap where the nuts clamp down so the nuts are below the bottom of the cap but its too late now.

What about taking a torch to the pan and getting it nice and warm then tightening it down to the block with it still hot enough to bend the pan? if you had something under the heads of the oil pan bolts to keep the pan rail straight it might work. I'll probably have to figure this out too when I get my 410 to that point.
I think I figured it out. I don't know if you are using a windage tray 427TP but if I use the thick felpro gasket and the original 428 CJ tray whick is pretty thick for a windage tray along with the other thick gasket the oil pan completely clears the nuts and only needs slightly adjusted to clear the rest of the stud. Should work out. Heads will be in Monday so I'm gettin pretty stoked.
