Local counties are saying they will refuse to honor Governor Spitzer's new policy allowing illegal residents to obtain driver's licenses in New York state.
Rensselaer County clerk Frank Merola says he expects many more county clerks across the state will join him in denying driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants.
Good for him yes, but he and others who do not follow the governors instruction will probably be replaced by someone who will. Like it or not, you don't follow orders, you pay the price.

Correct...But at least you will go to your grave knowing you did the right thing.
If the Governor says so, how is refuting that "the right thing"?
I'm not sure which side of this issue that I'm on, frankly. But if my boss says that this week we're gonna do it this way, I'm pretty obligated to follow orders.
(Please don't get silly on me here. We're not talking about an employer ordering an employee to go out and kill puppies.)

The state legislatures pass the bills, the governor either signs them and then enforces them, or he vetos them.
If NY is anything like any state I've lived in, he doesn't get to determine what makes someone eligible for a DL. That's up to the legislature to pass and him to support or not support.
Can't say I blame them for refusing- I can't believe Spitzer is pushing this. It is not like insurance is required to procure a license- who are they kidding..
I agree with their thoughts, but not their actions. What kind of a mess would we have if people did ( or didn't do ) their jobs according to how they felt about a certain matter rather than because that is their job.
None of this has yet to happen & all of it is purely hypothetical, of course, but isn't that what makes it fun?

I would argue that they are acting according to their job description as laid out by the legislature. Spitzer is the one acting outside his prescribed duties and the clerks following his invalid orders would also be in the wrong.

I Spitzer is trying to impose his wishes by caveat you are absolutely right.
I posted that piece because I thought it was important. This man, and others like him, were standing up for what they believe is right. These immigrants are illegal. No if's, and's, or buts about it. If the Federal and his state government wont address the issue, they will. His story needs to be told. If you support illegal immigration, quit reading now. If you support the man and you don't want your children to grow up in a third world "mess" then forward it on, send him an email or whatever.
Our state is also turning into a mecca for illegals for the same reason. On taxes are on the rise, schools overcrowed, and dont get me started on the crime.
It's high time WE remind the government....BY the people...FOR the people!
In Texas, the governor is not the "boss." The county clerks are elected by the people, and follow guidelines as outlined by the legislature. The governor cannot force them to do anything. jd
Hallelujah! Someone was finally able to grasp the ILLEGAL part of the title illegal aliens. Who does the gov. think he is anyways? I wholeheartedly agree with Jetdoc & Stevebricks!! This OUR country not Mexico's or Brazil's or anyone elses. If they don't want to do it right throw 'em back in the water and keep 'em there
