I'm considering replacing my '99 Expy used mainly for towing a travel trailer with a bigger beast. I have found locally a 2001 V-10 X for $12,500 with 95,000 miles.
However, I'm hesitant because of the blowing plugs issue. I wanted to know from those who own V-10's is this really a problem that I can expect to have happen (not "if" but "when"), or are these just isolated incidents.
Alternately there are 2500 3/4 ton Surburbans in my price range, but a "famous" intake manifold gasket problem on our 3.4L V6 Olds set us back $1300 so I'm shy of GM drivetrains at this time. Not that Ford is immune (3.8L V6 head gaskets and 3.4L V8 SHO cams) from drivetrain issues where they refuse to admit design problems.
I Had A 2001 Ex 4x4 V10 With 70,000miles And Did A Lot Of Towing, Never Had Any Problems With The Exception Of An Exhaust Stud Breaking Off, However, The Dealer Fixed It In A Day. What Condition Is The Truck In? Is It Clean, Maintained?
As far as I'm concerned it's a non issue. Google timesert. The price quoted is high. See what they're doing on e-bay.
eBay prices are a joke. Bids usually top out at $3-5K below wholesale. Most guys bidding want somethin for nothing and/or aren't serious buyers. not a good indication of true market value imo.

If the reserve is met or a buy it now price is listed how is it a bad indicator of market value? I always look at eBay to see what I really should be paying for a vehicle. I bought my last two there including my Ex. I prefer that as an indicator over guide books, i.e. NADA, Kelly. Or what a dealer is asking. When is the last time you sold a vehicle at retail figure from one of those books? I certainly hope you have'nt paid retail figure for a vehicle.
If you find what you want on eBay you can always have vehicle checked out before you buy. Several reputable companies nationwide do it for $100 or so. Many sellers offer a warranty on your purchase also. Just my two cents and experience with eBay.
I have only had brakes to replace on mine, fronts were warped. 111,000 miles and it runs super smooth. Drove all over the east coast towing a big trailer and had a great time.
You already own an Expy, the plug blow out was common problem to all the modular engines. It happened to the 5.4L and 6.8L. I have owned two V10s, both were 2000MY and no problems at all. For 12,500 I think you can find one with lower miles on the clock.
