2001 V-10 Questions
seems like the market has actually gone up a bit in price from what I see in the classifieds, but there are still bargains. Especially the V10 as most uninformed buyers are scared of them.
I just bought my '00 a bit over a month ago now with 90k on it for $6650. This was an eBay special - the guy had a starting bid of $6k with no reserve. It's a black 4x4 Limited with the V10. I love the truck, it's really great.
Right now it's got a bit over 91k. I drove it about 1000 miles in the first week and then left it at my friend's shop to take care of the minor maintenance. The truck came with Warn manually locking hubs in front, the air and fuel filters had recently been done, as well (Air filter is a K&N). Tires look brand new and were claimed to have under 5000 miles on them (I believe it). Interior was almost mint. A couple of very minor body imperfections, but I consider that acceptable for a daily driver work truck. No rust. The front brakes had been just redone recently with a set of PowerSlot rotors. AC blows ice cold, truck starts up and runs great. Fuel economy on the highway empty at 70 seems to be in the 13.5-14 range on average.
The truck came having just been at the dealer for a new PCM, with the dealer report stating that the alternator had a bad diode and should be replaced, and in addition that 8 out of the 10 coils were bad. I bought a new replacement alternator (NOT rebuilt) for $200 and a set of 10 new Ford coils. I can't remember what the website was that I got them from, but they were under $50 each. The coils did in fact look bad, some the insulation was cracked badly. I did the alternator and serpentine belt myself (the serpentine belt looked original).
My friend is a mechanic and I decided to have him do the work needed on it because I don't have time these days, even though I am plenty capable. Work has been keeping me far too busy, and so has my volunteer work. So, I had him put new rear pads and rotors on, install the new coils (along with a new set of the proper Motorcraft plugs torqued to spec), flush the trans fluid and put in new Mercon V, and flush the coolant system. I threw an oil change in there as well.
In pulling the spark plugs, he noticed that two of them had heli-coils in them, indicating that two of them had either been overtorqued and the threads stripped, or they had had the plug blowout issue. This was not disclosed when I bought the truck. They were reinstalled and torqued properly. I am going to verify the torque on them after driving the thing a bit. So, my guess is that this truck ahs had the blow-out issue, but since there were two different types of plugs in the engine, I wonder what the exact story is. My best guess is the previous owner was an idiot and paid the money for the PowerSlot rotors, but didn't torque the plugs right.
After driving the truck about 650-700 miles (5 days of driving to and from work, plus one long trip driving it home) I was 100 miles into a 200 mile trip with it driving to New York City when the thing just up and died on me (see the thread I wrote on it, I believe the subject was something like "HELP! Dead Excursion!". It appears to be an issue with the anti-theft system, and I had my friend take it to the dealer after he was done with his work on it. He is dropping it off today. This issue was not disclosed in the auction, and I honestly believe it was not a problem that the seller had noticed - it was just my bad luck that it started right after I bought it.
With this work, I still am happy with the truck and believe I got a very good deal. Plus I got some new parts on the thing, and I hope that after this service the thing will last me for a while without giving me any more problems. Judging from the comments on this board, I have good reason to suspect I will get another 100,000 miles out of this truck with minimal issues, but time will tell. I certainly would not worry about the plug blow-out issue, or consider it to be a reason to not buy the truck, provided you are satisfied with the price for the condition. Always try to get the best deal you can, but remember that always being the lowest bidder isn't always the best idea!
The Excursion was my first after having owned 5 Suburbans. My biggest complaint now is that the Excursion has absolutely spoiled me and by the time I get ready to get rid of it, there doesn't appear to be anything available in its class. I guess I'll be hanging onto "Fordzilla" for many years!

I look forward to getting into the thing and driving it. Gas mileage ain't great but its way better than I my GM 454 and about the same as my 7.3 powerstroke.

In my case, my 454 Suburban did about the same as this thing. But this truck is way, way more truck.
The interior looked like new, the body was perfect except 3 door dings and a couple of scratches.
My letdowns are due to the weak parts used in the chassis from the factory. Ball Joints, Tie Rods, Stabilizer Links and the ESOF system. In my opinion a truck with only 80k driven by a soccer mom should not have problems with those "heavy duty" pieces.
Other than that my wife and I fight over who gets to drive it.
