I have a 68 f100 360cid. I got a tune up from my step dads friend he came over and did it all for me. He put new spark plugs, wires, and rotors. He did it around noon, then later on that night i drove it around for about 2 hours. Then the next morning it started great and idled great.... but then after about 10 minutes it started to chug very badly when i gave it gas. I put it in neutral and tried to rev... but nothing it would chug very hard.... also some loud pings in the engine everyonce in a while... anyone know what htis would be.. the timing.. Please help, thanks
Just checked to see if that was the problem. The choke is working fine. Let me correct myself from the last post. It worked good when i started it this morning for about 10 minutes. Then it just got to the point where i couldnt hardly accelerate. It would chug every time i tried to. I tried it on and off today about 5 times. I went and got a new fuel filter but advance auto parts gave me the wrong one. Any other suggestions why the heck its doing this?
Do you suppose your friend's Dad left the distributor loose? If you can rotate it with your hand it ain't tight enough. If not that check to see if maybe the vacuum line to the distributor came off?
CRJ, when is the last time you replaced your fuel filter ? How much gas is in the tank ? Is the fuel in the tank fresh, or is it stale from sitting for a few months ? DF
CRJ, since you just had a tune up, you might want to pop open the dizzy cap and make sure the connections are tight on the points and condenser. Loose wires under the cap can make things run strangely. Better yet, how about a Duraspark or a PerLux Ignitor ? DF
yea there all connected fine. I think i might get a electronic ignition. How much are they. And where should i get one from. Auto Zone? Advance Auto? Thanks
Ok, i found out what the problem is. I have 2 points in my distributor. 1 point does 4 clynders then the other point does the other 4. If these points arenet synchronized then the engine will backfire and wont acclerate right. Now, arent there places ( if there are still any that do it) that will sychronize a dual point distributor? Or should i just get a electronic distributor. Please help, im only 17.
