You might consider a piece of foam for the bed. I have a wooden platform in the back of my truck. It is essentially a 4x8 plywood and some hinged plywood flaps sitting over a frame of 12x2 rails going front to back agaisnt the wheel well humps and some 2x4 cross members to support the plywood. On top of this I have some cheap indoor outdoor carpet I got from Home Depot, cheap. Then I have a 4 inch thick foam pad I got from a War surplus shop. On top of that more carpet and then whatever sleeping bag I want.
The wood probably costs about $20, the foam about $40, carpet about $20 maybe less. It has been in service since about 1997. Very easy to remove from the bed when I need all the space.
Just an idea.

Better get a battery-operated carbon monoxide detector
Boy and girl, lived next to each other, would come home at night and hang out in the car for a while, making out and stuff, then go in for the night. One night they stayed a long time in the car ..... his mom went out to see what's up... and they were dead (or close). Had the engine running for the heater. Very frigging sad.
wow, you guys have some pretty interesting ideas. Thanks.
The easiest thing for me might be the tent on the open trailer idea with a folding cot.
A cap on the bed is out of the question becuase the wife has a GN horse trailer and I do not have anywhere to store it when not in use.

I know the front seats don't lean back very far, but there's a little modification you can do that will allow them to recline back until they hit the rear seat. Might make for more comfortable sleep in one of the front seats.
The couple times I've slept in mine, I just squish across the back crew cab seat. Wasn't the most comfortable... sorta like sleeping on a real short couch, but it worked fine.

I have taken naps on my front seat a few times laying across the center, flipping up the console. I actually was just thinking about this I was trying to figure out how I could sleep in the bed on an air matress. With the tonauo conver down and the gate closed, but I do like the bed tent idea other than I would have to keep putting up and down all the time.
the seat back in my crew cb leans back far enough ,,i sleep in it ll the time when i move cars. a pillow and a blanket. take your shoes off so your feet dont get tngled up in the pedals. i sleep in my 05 diesel jetta all the time when i do long haul over-size pilot car work.
