Henry Ford is probably rolling in his grave... he wanted to make his automobile AFFORDABLE.
I bought a left over 04 XLT loaded 4X4 with 5.4, towing package, LS, running boards, etc (almost all options) and I paid $22,549 after negotiations and rebates. The stripped down work trucks I have seen are over $25,000 less than you said.

We could afford a new truck to replace her 01 150 supercrew 4x4 but we talked about it and decided we want to build another house. I'm not sure we need 3 houses but she wants a house in the country here, we live in the city here now and I have a house on Norris lake in Tn which is where I am from.

What a Steal, OldPaint! What size gun did you use? (kidding, of course)
I just traded a 1990 XLT Lariat 2WD, 6.5 ft. bed 4.9 w/3.08 rearend and 5-speed manual. It had 181,000 on it and still had some light bulbs that were factory original. All I ever replaced were: fan clutch, alternator (2 years ago) and clutch (concentric slave crapped out) Everything else was maintenance, batteries, etc.; and it would probably go another 180,000, 'cept'n for my bad back with no way to put a better seat in it, being a regular cab. Only thing is, around here, even in August this year, you can't find an '04 for less than $20,000 except for stripped-down XLs. The law of supply and demand!!! Everybody wants something BIIIIIG for a status symbol and will likely never take off the asphalt. This is the shame of it all, such a waste of natural resources to feed stroke fragile little egos. And lest I forget - FORD RULES!!!

You see everybody wants all those options but nobody wants to pay anything for them. For a 1/2 ton pickup a base Ford is $18K and GMC/Chevy is $15K. Then ext. cab adds $3K and crew cab adds $10K, 4X4 and $5K, Auto tranny is another $1K-$2K. A/C adds about $1,500. and fancy tape deck can easly add $500-$1K. And on it goes. Everytime I see someone whine about how much a half ton costs I ask them how fancy they are buying. Not that long ago a local dealer was advertising a brand new '07 Chevy 1500 for $14,900. Some people want something for nothing and the rest don't know how to shop around.
