Ug. It has not been a good year for my little car.
93 Ford Escort 1.9L 5 speed manual.
Won't go into lower gears. Sometimes.
Clutch feels fine.
Sometimes, revving up the rpms will allow it to slip into gear. Issue is happening more and more frequently. Sometimes, I have to shut the thing off to get it into second...then just start slow, and pray my way into third. Goes right into 4 and 5 without an issue.
For the last year or so, it has gone right into reverse and worked properly with a loud "clacking" noise. A mechanic diagnosed that as a broken gear some time ago. (late last year?) but as it keeps working, keep driving it.
Currently, reverse is as hard to get into as first. Lots of grinding noise.
If reverse and first are doing the same thing, then you either have a faulty slave cyl., or your clutch is giving up the ghost. Have you tried bleeding the hydraulic clutch?
You could just be low on fluid also.
Um...forgive my lack of knowledge here...but in this car, the slave is fed from the master cylinder for the brakes. It does lose fluid over time, but never anything drastic...I top it off every month or so.
And I did check that (fluid level) yesterday. It's got an appointment with a mechanic on Monday.

Yup. Seems the problem was I had too many dollars in my pocket.
Apparently, there is a check valve in between the master cylinder and the slave cylinder that can leak/malfunction to the point that the clutch pedal feels like it should, but the clutch does not actually disengage the transmission from the engine...thus I couldn't get it into gear.
New Master Cylinder, Slave Cylinder and various hydrolic fittings and one check valve later, the car seemed fine on the drive home.

I'm not certain if we're "done" or not...it'll take a few days for me to trust it, as it was working intermittently before. I'll try to remember to update this thread then, but feel free to remind me if I space it.
