I have figured out what was wrong with my truck the ignition pack was bad
I tested it by using a resistance metter when you look at the plug there are 4 connectors - - - - the first one is the + th other three are - when you check for resistance you should get the same on all three against the + I was only geting 1 on two and 0 on the other the new one test 9 on all three just some info I hope can help someone out there.
That's good information. Can you specify what year 4.0 you have? I don't know that it would change any from year to year, but, just in case, it might be good information to add.
It runs better but it started to back fire again at three thousand RPMs I pulled codes I got bank 1 of #2 o2 sensor bad but that would not cause this I was reading on the cam possision sensor and I think I can adjust the timing by adjusting that???????? If im wrong please let me know before this weekend again its a 96 explorer 4.0 ohv it back fires through the throatal body
new fuil pump filter cleaned the tank plugs wires tps egr egr sens iac mas
it is 18 to 21 advanced any help would be great

Larry, the cam position sensor times the fuel injection pulses. The crank position sensor times the ignition firing.
To backfire out the throttle body, the igniton has to be too far advanced somehow, (to ignite the charge before the intake valve is closed). Can you check with a timing light, to see what the actual timing is at around 2500-3000 rpm?
Are the plug wires routed correctly, on both the plug and coil pack ends?
the wires go from passanger side front 1st wire in first front cyl then mid in mid and last in last driver side front is in the back mid is in front and back is in midd (Wrong????? )

Larry, according to your description, the wiring order is wrong on the driver's side.
The driver's side front of the coil (#5), goes to the driver's side middle cylinder.
The driver's side middle of coil (#6), goes to the driver's side rear cylinder.
The driver's side back of coil (#4), goes to the driver's side front cylinder.
AAAA my book showed the coil pack the same but the wires 6 and 4 are reversed on the mottor..... I will try that when I get home. It runs great for a wile then it starts back firing at the intake I pulled the top of the mottor apart 4 time ran a real time scan on it gat bnk one of o2 2 and a shift mod in the trany are the only codes that come up BTW the ob2 scanner reads the fuil preassure I have great fuil preasure 120 lbs of compression in the cylenders nothing leaked off, have a stcking lifter or valve from time to time cylinder1 timing flux from 10 to 30 advanced read the next post
