I have yet to own an 08' (I have ordered one though). I have read numerous threads reguarding this new motor and the poor fuel mileage. Here are my 2 cents worth...
A: Heavy Duty, Definition: Power to spare, pull anything, more GVW than GM (just had to note that)
B: Instead of expensive mods that can ruin your motor and truck, transfer your excess money from mods to a larger fuel tank and if that isn't enough add another one in the bed of your truck i.e. tool box transfer flow
C: If bitching about mileage from mileage from a heavy duty truck, then why the heck did you want one??? Go buy a Prius or smoething along those lines.
Yes I do know what it's like to have high fuel bills I own a Moving and Storage Company. Our trucks have Cat's in them and get no more than 6 MPG empty or loaded, we also have a couple chevy with the 350 V8's in them and we are lucky to see 10 MPG EMPTY, and they can't tow what these new trucks can!!
AS for me I'll take a hit in the pocket book just to know that I can pull down a house and then some. WAY TO GO NAVISTAR AND FORD!!!
C: People are frustrated about the DROP in mileage, most of us come from the hi teens, spent 50K and got 12's, you don't think that's wirth a gripe?
You realy can't compare your moving trucks to the suburbanites truck vehicle, we already had good H D trucks now we have good H D trucks with sucky mpg.
I still think it's the best truck I have driven. sucky mpg or not.
right on the money (05 CO King Ranch) thats the way i think. Also its got more hp than before, so why would we expect better fuel mileage. Superduty rules for me what yall think?
I bought the truck even after reading these forums on MPG. I didn't buy it for MPG. My 99 Dodge Ram had crappy mpg and I couldn't stand the truck. I tried a Nissan Titan and really enjoyed it. I have had my truck for 6 days and put over a 1000 miles on it and have seen the mpg go up from 12.1 to 15.1. Good or bad MPG, this is the BEST truck I have ever owned. I like it much more than a few GM/Chevy 2500 that some friends own.
Certainly there is a line in the sand for everybody... At what point is the mileage so poor that even an Arab Sheik or Oil Co executive throws their arms in the air and says "where are the keys to the Geo Metro, I'm tired of standing at the pump"
I went from a SRW psd to DRW knowing full well there would be a 2-3 mpg reduction but hoped for the best. I currently get 15 mpg city & 18 hwy (unloaded) and 11 mpg pulling a 14k load so I'm happy. Although I wouldn't be very pleased with 5-7 mpg pulling the same 14k load but I don't own stock in ExxonMobil either.
FWIW I genuinely believe the 6.4's will achieve better mpg as they get more miles: Diesels break-in hard.
Southeast WI diesel is about 40 cents more a gallon. For most of the summer the price was about the same for both. They both peake around 3.20 but gas started coming down and Diesel is moving. Spring time it was the other way around
I agree on the V10 comments. $6800 and much lower maintenance costs will buy a LOT of gas. It used to be that the greater MPGs of the diesel would offset the purchase price and maint. (when it was a $5k option) and diesel was cheaper than gas, but around here it is at least $.10/gal more than premium. And the V10 seems to be on par with the 6.4 as far as MPGs go according to what those who own V10's are reporting. I know that there are valid reasons for getting the 6.4, but if you don't have a gooseneck or 5th wheel installed (and many I see don't), why bother?
I AGREE, BUY THE V-10 if the diesel is no better!!
Yes, if you are not going to tow heavy, A V10 with tow boss 4:30's will tow as much as a Chevy or Dodge Diesel. But if you are going to tow heavy, My present 5ver is about 17k and will be trading up to about 20k then the new 6.4 is the way to go. Or if you want the status of knowing you have the best Super duty on the road then enjoy the 6.4. That is why a lot of people buy nice sports cars, or luxury sedans because of the way it makes them feel when they drive it. I know when I drive my Firehawk it makes me feel special comparison when I drive my kids Aveo. If the new Super Duty 6.4 makes you feel good then go for it. I really enjoy my 6.4, maybe it is a man thing. I work hard for my money and how I spend it on my truck too!

Firehawk,
I work hard for my money so I do not waste it on things that I feel will justify my manhood. That is defined by how I live my life, treat my wife dogs,...
As far as being too poor to get a PSD not all of us gasser did not have the money for the PSD we just got other toys with it.

Hi Bagger,
Didn't mean to come across in an insulting way to you. Just the feeling that I and others may get. I work hard too in giving my family quality time too. We go camping for about 40 days a year. I gave up my golf clubs for now to spend time with them on the weekends. I did drive a 99 V10 for 8 years before I made the jump. If I had a lighter RV would have stayed with the V10 with the towboss. Sorry again I came across wrong to you. (Was trying to rib the Chevy & Dodge guys in good fun)
