I had stop lights yesterday morning... My daughter used the truck in the yard to drag limbs up for her birthday party/bonfire. I noted lastnight when she needed daddy to untie the rope from safety chain loop that it was also the loop i use to keep trailer light plug from dragging the road. I did not see damage however. Today momma rings me from her cell on the way to work that someone told her the brakelights were out. Tonight when she got home I inspected the trailer light harness to find it looks fine. Checked fuses and haven't seen any blown. It is a 1990 f-150. Isee a rectangle switch on brake pedal arm near half way down from top... is that the switch? I also have a white switch/actuator higher up towards dash but it appears to have vac line rather than wire... would that be cruise interupter?
She needs to leave at 6:30AM so I would love to hear an easy fix for tonight!
Thanks in advance...
Brent
put your handy dandy test light on that switch ..... you should have power at all times on one wire .... and power on the other wire when you push the pedal .
If you have power at both when its pushed ... then a limb has pulled something underneath the truck I would assume .
FYI ......The brake lights also go through the turn signal switch in the steering wheel .
It sounds like the rope pinched the wire just enough to short it out, but not a big nick. The turn signal and brake are the same bulb. Maybe not the same fuse. I wouldn't trust just looking at the fuse. I always pull them and test it. It's easy to miss a bad fuse.
couldn't find my test light but used ohm meter to find the switch seems fine. I switched fuses around and that ain't the problem either... Turned on hazards and they don't work... but turn signals do... I did not see any obvious wire damage under the truck. Is there any possibility it is under the hood? I have a severly injured left arm (I am left handed) so I am not as able as I would like to be.

if you have signals .... then the wires in the back are probly ok . Hazzards might need a new flasher . It has its own flasher .
You are down to the turn signal assy in the wheel .... or the brake pedal switch ( but you say you have current there )
I like the flasher idea. The fact that his daughter was dragging logs right before this happened is hard to overlook. I want to believe that a wire got pinched and shorted someything out.
I just checked the flasher wouldn't do anything BUT. They are both fed from the same fuse. Fuse # 1. I'm giving you a copy It will probably be to small. The way I read this diagram the only thing the brakes and flashers have in comon is the fuse. I know you said you checked it. I would make sure you checked the right one. Bottom left E-24 is the fuse and stop switch. What I have circled was from something else I was working on. But It does show the turn signal switches

My wife had a few after work errands to run so it was dark when she got home. I intend to "jumper" the 2 prongs on the plug to the BL switch and if that does not produce brake lights I can safely assume the problem is the turn signal switch?
I am completely one armed since rolling over her jeep cherokee several times and crushing it 'tween the jeep and ground. What will I be tearing apart of the column to access the turn signal switch? Anyone no the wire colors used for this harness?
Thanks again,Brent
