On my last two trips from Ventura, CA to the Colorado River I have achieved 18MPG on my 1/2/03 FX4 with hauling ~1000 lbs of stuff.
It's a 650 mile round trip with varing elevation from seal level to 3500 feet and with some desert winds as well, so I have the air conditon on as well.
Could I have reached the magical engine "break-in cycle"?
Also, since my 03 did not have the lie-O-meter, my calculation method is the fill up the tank to the brim and dividing the miles driven by the number of Diesel gallons.
I just wanted to share this positive message with you folks.

I did high 17's on the Grand Canyon trip, but I was running a very light load. You're my new hero! BTW, I may have to defect... V10's are falling from the trees' down here and I can't find a quality 6.0 to save my life (or wallet).

My MPG keeps getting better and better, Im running a lift and 35 inch tires and I can see 18mpg pretty easily doing 65-70mph. Im pretty impressed with my truck so far
i have made three or four trips between pittsburgh and philly and have consistently run between 19.5 and 21 at 65-75 mph. I have a 6 speed though so i am sure that makes a difference.
running empty we went from Showlow AZ to Colorado Springs on one tank. Did the same on the return average was about 18, as I recall it was 650 miles +- 20. Anyhow was on I 40 doing 80 mph indicated at 2500 rpm. 04, FX4 CC with only 18000 on it. Comming out of Colo we went thru cimmaron, santa fe to Abq to I40. Granted in the central mts only went about 65 sometimes less. I was going 70-72 at 2100 rpm on way up, wife said it was too slow to speed up, thats when we went to 80. Her comment after the trip " I love this truck, its comfortable. fast, and gets good milage".
I have only changed to a gibson turbo back with cat exhaust nothing else.

I have same results of A-Rod with similar truck modifications (35" tires and lift kit). 18MPG HWY when empty on generally flat highway terrain otherwise 17MPG HWY empty in our Rocky Mountains. Pretty happy with the truck as well besides having head gasket and bolts replaced.
Two guys in my company have 2004's and claim they are getting 20MPG empty in the same highway mountain range I get 17MPG and they are completly stock trucks.
It seems acheiving 18MPG should be the norm and achieving anything greater than this is basically a bonus on the 6L's for those of you who can.
Only time I hit in the 20s was driving it home from Oregon brand new -- wouldn't go over 70 and was going between 55 - 65 mostly. 18 has been tougher to hit since I put the bigger tires on, but if I slowed down to 65 I bet I could do that or maybe a touch more...
Wouldn't trade it for 2 dmaxes tho.... This truck is bigger, badder, waaaay better looking, was a far better value, and it doesn't overheat like my '05 dmax did...
My best so far is a little over 20.It was empty & mostly flat land. I got 17 last tank & that was almost all city miles. I'm very impressed with the mpg of my 6.0.

I regularly hit just below 20 when empty on freeway. I was really happy because this was the best MPG I have ever had- Only our old Cummins 12 valve motor can touch those numbers- but that is like driving a 170hp wagon! So it does not really count!
Now that I see the really poor MPG of the new (post January build) trucks, I like my truck even more!
