Post Pinion Nut

I replaced the Pinion seal without marking the pinion nut position and retightening the pinion nut to the original position. Since the pinion nut is probably not in the same position or tightness as originally, what is the procedure to tighten the pinion nut to the correct torque. Can anyone confirm or is familiar with the requirement to return the pinion nut to the same tightness position? Most importantly, how do I ensure that the pinion nut is tightened properly. I have a 1986 F350 diesel with a Dana 4:10 rear end.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Since you don't know where it was, just tighten it as tight as you can get it with a breaker bar and a 24" cheater pipe. It's pretty hard to get it tight enough without the truck trying to run you over. If you have a good impact wrench, set it on it's highest setting and let it tighten it. I believe off the top of my head it's around 200 ftlbs of torque to crush the sleeve.

Thumbs up

Thanks Dave for the comprehensive explanation. I now understand that the nut needs to be as tight as I can get it. I don't believe I have the 200 ftlbs in me to crush the sleeve. This will put me back on the road in short order. I appreciate you helping me understand what needs to be done!

When I swapped to 3.08s, the instructions called for 300fbs of torque for the sterling 10.25 diffy, I just used a breaker bar and cheater pipe.....and some wheel blocks.
