Mercon tranny fluid is the recommended fluid in there. Is that the best? Don't know but if I were to put a synthetic in there I would be sure to flush very well as it operates the boost/power for the brakes too. Keep it simple.
Our trucks don't use "power steering fluid". The power steering pump uses ATF. When I had an bumpup last year and busted the pump coolant line, the guy that made the quick repair to the line add about 2/3 of NAPA power steering fluid to the resevoir. It was my fault for not watching, i guess the cop had my attention. Anyway, pump sounded bad all the way home 350+ miles. Got home and called back to the station that made the repairs and he said that he did use power steering fluid and also stated that is what goes in there. I flushed the system with syn atf and it has never sounded better.
so is power steering fluid any different? what if u dont know whats in ur pump? can i just add something to it?
They are all hydraulic fluids but with different properties. I have topped mine off with STP PS fluid in the past in a pinch with no problems but would try to avoid mixing fluids if possible.
