P-pump

I was just wondering if there is anyway to take a 7.3 IDI and put a p7100 on it rather then the lazy injector pump........Maybe change the heads to direct injection and build up the internals for those that will turn the p-pump up, alot of work but.........I'm just wondering if it can actually be done.

PerkinsDiesel,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

Converting an IDI to direct injection would require a good bit of machine work to the head.

if you are talking an inline injection pump, i am fairly sure you would be talking a custom intake also because of the pump length and some machine work to get it to interact with our timing gear.

i dont think it would be anywhere near easy to convert to direct injection. to sink the injectors deep enough you will be going into the water jacket IIRC.

i think the week point will start to be keeping the heads on there.

there are some high performance possibilities like a dps or moose pump to run with the cummins boys.

High performance studs for the heads would keep it in good shape....I've asked some diesel mechanics and they have told me it could be done wit a moderate diff. level.......I just want to see an old mechanical 7.3 out-do the new computerized powerstrokes ......Hope someone tries it

You could cut a large hole in the precup cap which would let the fuel squirt right into the cylinder.
But the result is very hard cold starts.
Anything below 20 degrees and you probably need another vehicle, it probably will not start even if it is plugged in.

if you got the tools to make those mods it would be easier to build your own
engine from scratch

I'm just asking is it possible? Do you think the 7.3 inner parts could handle having a turned up(way up) p-pump?(really just kinda throwing out the idea for some real gearhead to do it)

The stock IP, if it is in good shape can put more fuel to the engine than it can burn.
Even running way more boost than a stock engine can stand, I can still black out the car behind me.

More fuel would just be a waste of fuel, and that much fuel would probably drop the performance.
