I have a 1968 f-100 2wd, i recently got a used bumper, but the brackets on the bumper are to wide, my frame is much narrower, anyone else have this propblem? I need a cheap fix.
Sounds like the job for the plasma cutter and welder to fabricate new mounting brackets for your installation. Support the bumper on the truck in its final location then fabricate brackets out of cardboard for templates then transfer to your steel material.
i just did the same thing. buy the wrong bumper that is.but mine was for the front bumper. the guy at the auto wreckers told me that 65-77 would work but when i got it home it was an inch too wide on both sides. sucks because it was the cleanest bumper there. i'm going back first thing monday and and looking for another one. is the front bumper the same way? does it need to be a 67-72?

What do you have, Styleside or Flareside?
If a Styleside, is it a step bumper, or contoured chrome or painted rear bumper?
1964/77: The rear bumpers, regardless of what the style is, are the SAME.
The brackets, however are not the same after 1972, because the width between the rear frame rails is 37 1/2" vs 1964/72's 33 1/2" inches.
Exception: 1967/77 F250 4WD rear bumpers/brackets are the same, because the frame width is 33 1/2." These bumpers are also used on all 1967/72's.
What you need are the correct bumper brackets for a 1967/72 to go with your present 1973 and later bumper.
There are three different types of bumper brackets: Styleside contoured rear bumper / Styleside step bumper / Flareside rear bumper.

Unless you saw him pull the bumper, I think someone placed yours in the wrong stack. He is correct 65-77 front should exchange. You may have gotten a 80 up.
There are some slightly different end shapes along the way, but I think 65-79 should fit.

Welcome to FTE
You may have gotten the correct bumper.
Outside of it being slightly longer, did it look the same?
Some 1964/77 front bumpers have slightly longer ENDS than the others, but mount the same with two bolts per side.
Why Ford did this I dunno, the part numbers are the same for all of them.
C4TZ17757C .. Front Bumper-Painted / Fits: 1964/77 F100/350.
C4TZ17757D .. Front Bumper-Chrome / Fits: 1964/77 F100/350.
1961/63 F100/350 front bumpers look similar to 1964/77's, but do not mount the same, as they use three bolts per side, instead of two.
The bumpers used 1978/79 do not look the same as prior years.
The 1980 and later bumpers do not look the same as 1978/79's or earlier.
John, if the OP hadn't have used this old thread (instead of starting a new one) to ask the question, I wouldn't have seen or answered it.
i didn't realize it was an old thread when i replied to it. i usually get yelled at when i start a new thread and there were other threads on the topic. i will start a new thread because i have more questions.
