I just had my Y- pipe swaped out for a after market one from summit racing that I read about in the Excursion forums I have a 05' Excursion 6.8L, with 25k on it. running a aero turbine muffler before the y-pipe install, it sounded like a very healthy V8 and also seemed to have better power thru out the rpm range, now it sounds like a rice burner on steroids and a definite loss of low end tq and hp, maybe the stock y-pipe is that way foe a reason?
received several compliments buy truck guys on how my V10 sounded with a stock y pipe and the Aero-Turbine muffler combo I was even accused of having the 5.4L in my X only once, I have done some research and have a few theories on how to help the flutter issue, the one I’m leaning towards is equal length pipes before the y-pipe I also have a 4 inch exhaust tip that might be enhancing the flutter noise, also flutter might be the cause of insufficient back pressure, this is why it is more common with the less restrictive set up’s out there, I am going to retrieve my old y-pipe from the shop first thing Monday just incase all else fails and also see if we could alter my set up to reduce the flutter also was thinking about asking ford engineers (if possible on line somehow) to shed light on the stock y-pipe design and the reason behind it. This isn’t rocket science (but might be in the neighborhood) I think with enough info we should be able to get some answers and maybe bust some myths, thanks for all the info through out this great web site it is awesome to have real people working the issues we come across.
