I have a 1983 F250 with a 460 it has a 3 speed with a granny gear.
I am wondering why I have no power in third gear I have power in 1st and
2 but third it just kinda chuggs along no power.

Welcome to FTE! What size tires are you running? is the engine in good running shape? Any performance mods? Alot of times for weak power the timing isnt set properly. check it with a timing light and see where its at. If no timing light there are other ways.
I just bought the truck two days ago its a extra project it runs pretty strong but
I think it has a small miss, there are a couple things wrong with it there is a oil leak and it smokes a little. I still need to do some stuff to it like change the spark plugs I thought the timing could be off a little also like you said.I shift it at about 45-50 then it feel like there is no gas pedal.

So your shifting about 3500-4400. It does sound like somthing is not in tune. Smoke is usually a good indicator of wear. If you wanna do the timing an easy way. Bump the distributor up a little, Then drive up a hill under full throttle, keep doing that till you hear it pinging. Then back the distributor down a tad. I assume you know what pinging sounds like. If not it sounds like a metal hammer knocking on metal, very loud fast taps. Back the dizzy down if you hear any pinging. A little bit for a short time is fine, dont keep driving it if its pining.
Almost sounds like the timing advance isn't working. Low ignition base timing would also make it feel acceptable at low RPM and run out of steam higher up.
The first thing you will want to do is to dump the factory timing chain and sprockets and get a cloyes set where you can advance the cam back to original pre-70's specs.
Makes a huge difference on the low end.
It also sounds like your vacuum advance diaphragm is not work. When the engine hits cruising gear and slows down, the distributor advance weights aren't spinning as fast, and vacuum needs to advance that breaker plate. Check the low speed circuit of the carb, too.
What carb are you running??

What's the transmission code on the door jamb sticker? Sounds more like an overdrive than a 4-speed w/ granny. At 45-50 the engine should be fairly screaming at you in 3rd. Back when I drove a stick shift pickup I was normally in the 1:1 gear by 35mph (unless i was showing off or trying to pass someone).
What are the rpms after you make the shift to high at 45 mph?
