I am working on my 1979 F100 shortbox that I just bought and the brake lights are not working. All other lights are working just fine but the brake lights are not. The last owner had installed a cd player very unprofessionally, so I would assume this has something to do with it. I have completely removed the cd player and the brake lights are still not working. I have replaced a couple fuses that were burnt but nothing still. I have tested the wires that go behind the brake pedal and there is no juice to them.... please help... I don't even know where to start. Thank you.

No cruise control. Thanks for responding... not getting much help on this topic yet. I would really like to fix this on my own and not pay a shop $65 an hour to figure out something probably simple. Thanks and hopefully you can provide some tips.

I would track down an EVTM (ford wiring diagram) or a repair manual that has the wiring diagram for your truck in it. Use it to track down where to look/where to trace your wiring. Does your turn signal/emergency hazzards work?
My turn signals and everything else work fine. The only other thing that is funny is when the lights are turned on the right hand blinker light is lit up on the dash... not for real... just on the dash lights. I would like to find a wiring diagram... is there anything online? Shouldn't there be constant power to the brake lights since they work even when the vehicle is turned off? I check the two wires behind the brake pedal and neither had juice. Thanks for the help... I really want to fix this on my own... rather than pay.
The reason I asked about cruise is because with it the entire brake light wiring is different than Non-cruise trucks.
Here is the brake light switch for non-cruise.
Let's start with the easy thing
Check to see if the button pops out when you press the brake pedal.
also with a multi-meter check the switch for continuity when the button is out.
If the Indicator light comes on without the T/S switch being actuated.. then you are getting power feedback though one of the exterior bulb sockets on what ever side it is lit.
The switches i have worked on had constant 12V going to one side of the switch. If you have a turn signal indicator partially lit, that means you have a bulb out someplace. Take all of your bulbs out, check them, clean the sockets and put them back in with a dab of dielectric grease. Run your signals, and verify which one was bad before you take it apart (take them all apart anyways to clean the contacts) and verify the new bulb fixed it.
There is no power to the switch behind the brake pedal... when the button is in or out. So now what? Man I hate wiring issues... I just don't know much about it and don't have the patience to track each little wire down. I do appreicate the help and I am trying.

i'd be willing to bed the steering column has been swaped , b/c you say the turn signal light on the dash is staying energized and you have hazzard lights and turn signals. sounds like to me the same problem im having , i just swaped to a newer column and power steering , i got all my lights to work but brake lights , b.c of the new column having more wires than my harness
