I just filled the tank on my 52 and wow, what a gas smell! There's carpet covering the tank. I suspect there's a leak somewhere along the fill spout area. Anyone run across this or has everyone run across this! I'll take the carpet out and look at it this weekend. Any thoughts other than don't smoke in the cab.
My guess would be that the rubber hose between the fuel neck and the tank is old, brittle, and cracked. The gasket between the fuel sender and the tank is probably leaking as well.
You should be able to buy a length of the fuel hose down at your local NAPA store.
Thank you for the advice. I did'nt even think about the sending unit. Speaking of that, the truck was upgraded with a SW fuel gauge. It seems the gauge and the sending unit are out of sink. It's a 12 volt system now, maybe the sending unit is 6 volts. Any fixes for this while I'm here?

I can't say for sure but the SW gauge is probably looking for a resistance reading of 240-33 ohms to read properly. This is common for some aftermarket, marine, and even some OEM sending units. You can get an adapter from Sacramento Ford Parts that will allow a modern 12V aftermarket fuel sender to fit the 52 tank. I did this with my 48. If you get the 240-33 sending unit and the adapter there's no guarantee that the SW gauge you have is the one for that resistance. If not, you would then have to buy another gauge to match the sender. Fuel gauges and senders have to match. Another thing you can do to keep the gas smell to a minimum is add a vent to the tank and use a non-vented cap. I did this on my 48 and ran a hose from the vent through the bottom of the cab. I have had zero fumes in the cab even on fillups.
