Hey last night my 97 explorer started idling really rought, to the point of shaking the car, and it has a sputtering noise thats coming from underneath the vehicle. I took it to a shop this morning and they said they couldnt find anything wrong with it. they hooked it up to the computer and still nothing. The idling comes and goes and sometimes when i accelerate it kinda hesitates. Other times its fine. i had the coil pack, plugs and wires replaced under a year ago. Any ideas on what it could be??
it also seems to idle rougher when i have my foot on the brake. I think i figured out whats causing the sputtering, i have a tiny hole in the guard for the catylitic converter, when i put my finger over it the sound gets a whole lot quieter, like it used to be. Still no idea about the idle problem though...
Make sure all vacuum hoses are tight and secure. There also seems to be quite a few people posting lately with idle problems. One of the culprits seems to be the IAC although your problem doesn't sound typical of it. Does your vehicle feel like it's going to stall?
car doesnt really feel like its gonna stall out....just idles low when stopped, and vibrates sometimes when i step on the gas. Replaced the pcv valve...didnt helpo at all....any other suggestions?
The PCM(on board computer) also controls the idle. I had mine changed out about 3 years ago on my '94 due to symptoms similar to yours. If everything else checks out OK, then you should get your PCM tested.
