Need Help Ranger Issues

Ive been trying to help my buddy with his 1990 ranger. Its a v6 4.0 auto 2wd from a 94 model explorer. There are a few issues going on and i dont know if theyre related:
1. When cold, there is a LOUD squeaking from the front of the engine. Ive replaced the tensioner pulley with no change. Once the engine warms up, the noise goes away.
2. There is a missfire. It doesnt change with temperature.
3. The transmission wont shift unless you let off the gas completely and then reapply. I also dont think ive ever gotten it to go into anything higher than 2nd gear, even while going 75 mph. Ive replaced the transmission vacuum modulator and at the modulator its measuring 20 inches vac at idle.
Sorry for such a long post but I NEED HELP!!!

As far as the squeaking goes....you may try a new belt. Check all the plugs, wires and coil for the miss-fire and if that doesnt help you may also want to run some injector cleaner through it....found that out the hard way on my wife's grand am. I'm no help on auto trans. though.....sorry.

The squeak is coming from the idler pully, replace it before it falls off.

Misfire is tricky, it will require some diagnostics. like spraying spark plug wires with water, see if you get any sparks, testing coil packs, etc.

Auto tranny, sorry, no help.

i had a whistle/squeal noise coming from the front of the engine.. but only when the ouside air temp was cold and only at around 2600-2700rpms. replaced the tensioner (easy one bolt) .. the old one was original and shot.
noise was still there so took off the idler pully( also original),carefully pried out the grease seal and lo and behold dry bearing. repacked with grease= noise gone.

Also, the missfire was a plug wire laying on the exhaust that melted the insulation, fixed that, and the trans wasnt PLUGGED IN DURRRRR. Still have the squeak though..

some applications may not have one! basically its a fixed pulley that isn't attached to any accessory, but just helps to route the serp belt. fyi, my engine has power steering but no a/c.

I have power steering and A/C, so does that mean i have 2? Also, I replaced the serpentine belt with no difference in noise

maybe you don't have an idler if each pulley is attached to an accessory.

With power steering and A/C on a 94 with a 4.0 the idler should be between the alternator and the A/C, and the belt should run over the alt, pully, under the idler and over the A/C.

The idler pully is simply a pulley that is bolted to the block (or accessory bracket) of the engine. The tensioner pulley is a pulley that is bolted to a spring loaded arm that keeps tension on the serpentine belt.
