I have this problem with my 1979 f150 300ci that I was woundering if anyone has had. After about 5 minutes after a c0ld start, it just decides to shut itself off. Just like I tuned the key off. Also, sometimes it does his while Im driving it. I could be cruzing along and then it just cuts out. If Im driving it and I have the gas pressed, sometimes when it cuts out it will backfire out the exhaust. It is manual trans and if I leave it in gear, usually it will come back to life in about 5-10 seconds. This problem seems to be getting more frequent. Im not looking for ideas of what it can be, because if I took the time, I can figure it out. However, before I get into it, I was woundering if anyone else has had this problem. It would save me time. Im leaning towards the ignition. Maybe the module, distributor, or coil. The problem with tracking it down is by the time I take a look at it the problem is gone.
The first to do is a visual inspection of all the connections and wires assoc with the ignition system. May be something simple as a bad connection etc.
yea, thats what I would do first too. In fact thats the only thing I did so far. I took the whole harness out and cleaned all the connector contacts, checked wire codition and retaped the harness.
Could be the Duraspark module on the fender well. Know anyone with a loaner? It needs to be the same color at the module where wires go in. Probably blue
I agree with Duraspark also. I just went through this a couple months ago. Took me forever to figure it out. Just run out and buy a new one, don't do what I did and solve every other problem first then come to the realization that you've over thought the issue and it was just a simple thing.

LOL... Sounds like the story of my life. Where's my Zoloft!!
I actually replaced the fuel vent line, fuel filter, fuel pump, carburetor, and coil before I got to the ignition module. I had just put a new gas tank into my bed and was thinking that it was a fuel delivery problem before I suddenly had a stroke of genius and figured it out. Duh! Felt like a complete moron. However, the truck runs like a dream now... LOL
If your ignition box comes into question, you can have it tested at the parts house for free, (assuming they have the equipment) The larger chains have it.
Try doing the wiggle test. After taking all nescessary precautions, start the truck, and move the wires around relating to the ignition system. If it conks out while moving the wires, re-start the truck and wiggle the wires again.
I am terrible at having the patience to diagnose stuff like this. I normally wind up buying a MSD box, reman'd distributor, and high voltage coil, and call the problem solved.
Sounds like ignition to me...fuel would probably not cause back-firing in the exhaust. Fuel usually more gradual starvation. Quick trick, hook up your timing light to the coil wire and run it into the cab. Watch the light and it should show you what the ignition is doing at that time...
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!PROBLEM FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Just to update and close-out this thread, I replaced the Ignition box and the problem is fixed. Thanks for the help.
