trany problems

k i got a 1988 ford f-150 just bought it a couple weeks ago and i love it but on my way to work i went to put it in to 1st gear heard a clank and when i went to take off i could go but it was like it was slipping i made it to work but it did not go very good in every gear like it was slipping after getting to work i had to get in so did not have much time so i went back out at break time and tryed to go it would not move at all so had it towed home i was woundering if it would be more likly that it was the tranny it self or if it could be the clutch assembly

thank anyone who can help me on this

Does the clutch seem to have a firm pedal? Did you notice any fluid near bottom of the bellhousing? Would say slave cylinder, but a "clank", sounds like gearing in the tranny itself.
