99 2.5 idle issues
I have a 1999 ranger 2wd manual. the first thing i noticed (last winter about january, approx. mileage 160k) was a smell of exhaust/gas fumes that i was getting into the cab when i would be stopped, presumably coming through the heater vents when i would be stopped and the engine was idleing. i tried to find the source of the "exhaust" leak to no avail, i also had a mechanic try to pinpoint the source, he was also unsucessful. due to the fact that i was having no other problems with the truck i decided to "let it go" rather than pour money into it at the dealership. about two months later check engine light came on, once again no big deal i went to autozone to get the code read and the port has no power to it... but once again being in college at the time and as the truck was still running fine.... i put off the problem, it was probably about this time that fuel mileage started to drop, but only slightly. i had no new occuances with the truck until about a month ago (mileage 190k) the truck began to not want to run when it was cold (right after startup 100 degree days) the truck will start and run fine but as soon as u put a load on it, it wants to die. and for about the first 3-5 minutes of driving the truck sounds and feels like it is running on three cylinders. after the initial start up the truck will run fine, like there isnt a problem in the world through idleing and all. and unless i let the truck sit for an extended period of time, the problem won't duplicate until the next day. i drive a lot during the day, probably an average of 200-300 miles a day during the week, and the truck never really has time to cool down, so this may be why it does not repeat...
ok i think thats all the background.... now to what i've tried to remedy the problems....
spark plugs/wires have been replaced in last 30k
both o2 sensors have been replaced
fuel filter changed
EGR valve has been cleaned?? maybe faulty??
oil has always been changed at 3000k since i've had the truck (since 54k) it seems to be burning about 1/2 pint per oil change
ABS speed sensor changed 2 years ago
IAC sensor changed 2 years ago
198k to date, 2wd, manual, 2.5L
Thats all i can think of off hand. What is really confusing me with this is why the engine is only performing badly when the truck is truely cold. and the fact that my code port is completely dead. any help is greatly appriciated. i'm lost as to where to turn next. and i really hope it isnt a ford dealership!
oh and one more thing i forgot to mention.... no matter how long the engine has been running, i can hold the throttle at a mid-RPM (not sure what RPM, no tach) while the truck is in neutral and cause the truck to miss badly. this never shows up while i'm driving the truck or when the engine is under load i guess, and i have to almost try to get the right rpm for it to do this, but it will do it everytime....
thanks again everyone

Also run a couple bottles of gas line dryer through you'd be suprised what it can cure!!
$15.00 for maf cleaner and 4 bottles of gas line dryer might work!! I used to drive a freightliner with a dead computer port it took me 2 months to find the bad spot in the
wire leading to the plug, I probably looked at the spot 200 times then one day it stuck out like a sore thumb!!!
