Smile 78 Axel Indentification
Just bought a 78 Subercab. Axel code on the door says B4 something. The next mark is either an I or a 1. If it says B4I does that make sense? or does B41 look right? I would like to know what my front and rear axels are and the gear ratios. Also, can this truck be both a trailer special and camper special? It has both the emblems on the truck. Your help is much appreciated.

Axle code is probably? a B4 which is a Dana 60 Limited Slip 5300 lb axle with a 4:10 ratio. The I or 1 might actually be a J which indicates power steering.

Mil1ion actually has all this info on his webpage for deciphering truck rating plates.

Defenitely not a J. I'm pretty sure that it is an "I". So it would read B4I. There no R or N. Thanks.

B4 is a 4.10 Limited sip dana 60

I means it has Power steering and an adjustable steering column (tilt) on 4500 lb front axle.

My mistake, the "I" indicates a power steering, tilt column with a 3800 D60 front axle.

How about Axle code 36A ?
I am still piecing together waht my truck was built as...

i seen this thread so thought i would attack that piece of info.

axle code 36A

1978 F350 Camper Special with "Ranger" trim package

the vin decoder revealed it is a F350, 2 wheel drive, V8 460, 4 BBl, 239 carb
built in san jose, ca
