Well I am not much a tow'er but I got a new trailer brake controller this weekend that is sweet! Short story long my dad bought it for his Semi that he hauls his 5'er with but the truck is too big to be using any interia controller so he had to go with an air brake sensing unit. So I bought the Tekonsha P3 from him. Its a step above the prodigy. It's not cheap but after a $20 rebate it will be $110. But man is it a gadget! LCD screen with all sorts of diplay colors and lots of touch button controls. I will be using it for the first time come this week so I don't know how it works yet but I gotta believe it will be more than I need! here's a link to see it. http://www.brakecontroller.com/tekonshap3.htm
I am not sure where my dad bought since the price is much cheaper than the link but I am sure he bought it from one of our hitch suppliers. I will post up on the results next week.
Sweeet! I need one too. I have a cheap one now and it seems to need adjustment all the time during a tow. Maybe it's me but it changes during a hard stop..insert puckering **** cavity. It happened this weekend, darn near wrecked the truck. Keep us informed.
Ditto! Put that near the AIC and CB and we'll be looking like a space shuttle before long Would definately be intrested in one at the price you got. Always seems like the controler in the 5 speed is too tight or too loose
Well I pulled the trailer empty last night and the brake controller was sweet. Between the disc brakes on my truck and the brake controller the truck stopped like dream. The trailer is atleast a 20 foot (I think it a 24 foot) by 8.5 enclosed car trailer. No idea how much it weighs (anybody have a good guess??). But it was quite nice to pull. The controller was very easy to use. The boost feature was very nice and the display rocks. My gauges, cluster, and radio are all blue lighting and this thing just matches perfectly. I will try to get a pics of it if I get a chance. I will also get more drive time this weekend as we head to the horse show about 2.5 hours away.
I will also talk to my dad about where he got the controller.
Is it a tandem axle? What is the weight rating? A 16ft flatdeck 7Klb tandem axle car hauler typically weighs 1600 - 1800 lb. So with the additional length you have and it being enclosed, a guess might be 3000 - 3500lb. I weigh stuff on the truck scales at a local rock quarry. Maybe you could find one that will let you weigh your stuff.
yes tandem axle enclosed. I couldn't find the tag for last night for the weight ratings and what not. I might try to run it across the scales before I bring it back. Local trucking company lets me go across to weigh my truck. I was think the 3-4k category. It one of the heavier trailer I have pulled empty (told you I didn't tow much!). The other was a 16' 3500# (empty) tanden axle dump trailer. I wish I had one of those dump trailers they are sweet!
welll just an update on the brake controller. It works awesome! The trailer isn't huge (under 8k for sure!) but man this controller is nice. very easy to set up, very nice display, the boost settings are noticably different from each other and makes for nice braking. I used the #2 setting on the highway but that was too aggressive for slower intown driving so I dropped to #1. The troubleshooting part of the controller (vehicle voltage, it can be a volt gauge too!, output voltage, output amperage are all very nice features. If you tow at all, I recommend this to anybody even if you already have a controller. If you tow alot you need this controller! It is well worth the money!
