390 build

loking at building a 390 for y 71 f250 for dailey use and some light towing. i have a factory 360 in there now with a 600 holly dual exhaust and a holley street dominator intake.

I have a std 390 from a 75 f150.
what i plan on doing is using the stock cast iron 4 barrel intake, holley 600 vacume carb, .030 over bore, should i use the stock truck heads or look for a diffrent set? I am not looking for huge rpms, just a good dailey driver. I have a 4 speed granny t18 now, but will be swapping a c-6. dana 60 with 3.89 gears, and 16inch tires.
I guess the questions are
1. heads?
2. Cashaft ideas,
3. Gear change (3.55)
4. stock converter, or a small stall,
I have dual exhaust already and no headers. would like to stay away from headers, is there exhaust manifolds that are better then the stock truck manifolds from the 75 truck?

Any build up help is greatly appreciated. I have upgraded the brakes and the stearing on this truck already, so that should be good to go.

Read the topic below, after that do a search for 'oil modifications', then spend a little more time reading past posts to get more ideas. The guys here really know the FE and there is a ton of info in past posts to help you with your build. Sounds like a great truck/project.
Good Luck!

I would not follow the advice in that thread for your buildup. Hogan wants a "street sleeper" that sacrifices daily drivability and towing/hauling for big power. You want good driveability, the ability to tow, decent mileage, etc. Different requirements mean a different build.

Your stock heads are fine. In fact, they're about the best you can get for your application. They probably are the D2TE-AA heads, which are quite sought after. Being '75 vintage, they probably already have hardened exhaust seats. Perfect.

A stock intake manifold is also perfect for your application. Your exhaust manifolds are fine, too. You could theoretically find some slightly better cast manifolds (406 cast iron headers, for instance), but they are very expensive.

The 600 vacuum carb is also perfect.

About all I can say is to do a quality rebuild. Do the oiling mods, use new top quality fasteners and gaskets, and use a good oil pump. Put in a new heavy duty radiator with trans cooler. For the camshaft, go with a fairly short duration dual pattern cam. For that application, I like the Comp Cams 255DEH or 265DEH. Use whatever lifters and springs the cam manufacturer recommends.

For the trans, the stock torque converter is fine. A higher stall is not what you want for towing and cruising. Rear end is 3.7:1 is good for towing, though a 3.50:1 or 3.25:1 would improve your mileage and still let you tow a pretty heavy load with that motor.

thats what was looking at I don't want a sleeper truck just a good work, driver. I will look in to he oil mods. Would a HV oil pump be needed, or just a stock replacment?

Stock is probably fine, though there's no real reason not to use an HV. More importantly, use an ARP drive shaft. The stock ones are somewhat frail and have been known to fracture with catastrophic results.
