I have never, ever installed one in any of the transmissions I have rebuilt. My dad will not put one in either. Yes..he has, but will never do it again. The customer requested it, but the build did not hold much more than 50,000 miles in a carpet van.
However, I have seen a lot of people using the transgo kits. They seem satisfied with them.
I think (not sure on the C4-been too long) that there are some modifictions you can do yourself that are just as good if not better than the kits. Do a few internet searches for the C4 and see if you can find them. They used to be online somewhere.
The kit might be easier for somone who does not know a lot about transmissions though. I just have a weird thing about using a hand drill in a valve body that is machined to .000???1 precision from the factory and swapping springs in there without knowing what they will really do.
I would rather swap in performance parts that are machined to tight tollerences. I just wish I could remember where the articles were.
On my explorer I did not mess with the trans at all (computer controlled), however, I have an SCT flasher and just use the 87 ocatane performance program. It shifts much firmer now.
I can't afford the 93 octane performance and torque programs right now. LOL
The C5 I built and put in my 89 ranger would shift real hard if you were on the throttle. I could shift into 3rd at 69 MPH (2.9 redlined at 5500 RPM) too. It did not have a kit, just built with close tollerences by me.
Ed, many moons ago when I was still working on my eng, tranny, suspension, etc. I installed a B&M Transpak shift kit. I chose to go with the High performance street mode for quicker, snappier shifts. When I go down the street now it shifts so fast that you almost don,t know it shifted. It feels real good and I would do it again. later I had my tranny beefed up by a guy that worked for Rancho racing xmissions. (extra clutch discs, different or extra planetary gears) etc. I can,t remember too much tech stuff since my stroke years ago. The shift kit was pretty easy if I could do it.(I have to confess that my wife Carol helped my out by keeping me straight with the directions.)
