I have a 1997 Ranger 4x4, 121000mi, 3.0, 5spd. I have pretty much had this problem since I bought the truck about a year or so ago. It runs strong and starts fine at first. It will start just fine in the morning or any other time I try to start it, but not after it has been driven. If I shut it off to go in a store or get gas it will not start back up untill I try it about 4 or 5 times and wait a few minutes. I have cleaned the MAF, changed the IAC, and checked all the lines and hoses. It was worked on when I got it to pass emissions (fuel evap can and some egr system lines) and I take care of the basics. Oh and I put a new starter and battery in. Also, during the winter it will start just fine after running, or just when it is colder out. During the summer I hate to drive it. I was told the compression could be off some how causing it not to start back up. Any ideas or recommendations would be GREATLY appreciated, I am getting really frustrated with this and don't know how much longer I am going to deal with it!!!! Thanks for the help----John
Get a can or two of keyboard duster and take a ride that yu know will cause the problem!!! When it fails to start, Hold the can of duster upside down so the liquid freon comes out(DO NOT SPRAY YOUR FINGERS) Try each component in the system,
Start with say the coil since it will take the most freon to cool maybe spray it for 20 seconds try to start, if that doesn't work move onto the next part, trying to start it after every component is sprayed!! A small metal component will take a much shorter blast then a similar size plastic component so adjust for component size and type of material, Do not overdo it a couple seconds then if that doesn't work and you sprayed
everything try a bit longer spray time!!! Really the thing that strikes me first about your problem is your fuel rail if it is bent or something is directly transfering heat to it
you are getting vapor lock!! Double check all the lines and make sure they are not too close to anything hot, maybe insulate or put a barrier between the manifold and the lines coming from the frame!!
I'm always a big one on checking the fuel pressure regulator. they go bad alot more than you think.
Seriously you will save money doing this: Buy a fuel pressure gauge, hook it up, and tape it to your windshield in front of the passenger seat. Go for a drive and have a passenger watch for a drop in fuel pressure. shut your truck off, keep an eye on the gauge. when you go to restart it, look at your fuel pressure.
otherwise I suspect a component of your ignition system going bad. You can usually start a vehicle with a bad fuel pressure regulator, it just doesnt run well. Another thing to do is buy a timing light or a spark testor. When it does not start hook up the tester or timing light and crank it. If you get no spark then an ignition component is getting too hot or going bad.
Just report back with whatever results, keep us informed. Thanks!~
i am going to try all that stuff when i get a chance. Fortunately it is a second vehicle and i work and go to college, so i will post when i figure anything out---thanks

My truck runs well after it starts about the fourth or fifth time turning it over. It eventually starts after turning it anywhere from 3 to 6 times but runs fine. Could it still be the regulator??
I read another problem like this one that turned out to be I think the the crank/cam sensor. It was only a couple of weeks ago I know I answered to it.
oh. I guess i will try that!! But even if no gas comes out it could still be the regulator though, right? I was told to throw a guage on it and check to make sure the pressure isn't screwed up. And while I am checking it to pinch the line to make sure the pressure stays the same. That's what I was told at least, sound good?
