Finally got to run my old ford..well i fired it up and i had to jack the rpm's up to about 3500 before it would even move..started rollin and the trannystarted slippin..so today i pulled the pan off and i had the wrong dipstick it was too long and hittin the bottom of the pan and laying down.it was about 3 quarts low..so while i had my pan off i put a new filter on it..and the ford aod b&m bracket and shifter lever for my shifter.i noticed that the throttle lever wasn't on the rod it sits on and it wasnt moving when i moved the shifter lever...dont know if its suppose to. but i put everything back like i found it and filled it with type f fluid. it starts rollin at about 720rpm now but its still slippin horribly..the tranny has 19k miles on it and has been sitting for a few years now...so i jacked the rearend up and ran it through the gears...shifts fine and didnt slip with no load on it..so maybe someone has experienced this before...but its really got me stupmed and im about ready to pull it and put a fmx in it but i would like to get this one working correctly to save me the time and pain of changing trannies. I have a 92 Ford AOD so maybe someone could give me some advice..thanks
The 92 AOD is an electronically controled trans.I have an AOD in my 79 that works just fine but it is a pre 92.You do need to get the Throttle Valve rod or cable adjusted correctly for an AOD to shift right.I'm sure somebody can help with info but it was either 91 or 92 when the AOD went to elec.control.
O,yea, when I first got mine running,it would go through the gears up on stands.I took it down the road and it wanted to wind out way too tight before shifting and wouldn't go into third gear until it seemed like the valves were going to float.I tinkered with the TV rod length and it's been working great for the last 4 years.
FYI, if you dont have the TV cable adjusted properly, you will cook your transmission. If your transmission was good before, chances are it probably aint good now.
well i pulled the pan back off and got everything set like it was but maybe the tranny is just junk..dunno but im going to ****** it out today and throw a fmx in it and be done with it.appreciate all the help
Putting an AOD back in the way it was before is NOT good enough, it needs to be properly adjusted. 400,000 is alot of miles for any ford overdrive transmission to survive, you must be lucky. IMO these things are junk, especially if you put anything more than 150 HP to them, don't maintain them religiously, tow in overdrive, get them hot, and do much more than drive them to church or VBS retreats. There are ways (now) to build them up so they can handle some serious beef, but in the early days, they were weak, and prone to failure. Later units received updates at the factory, which the aftermarket/rebuilders offer, but you have to pay extra.
Million are you okay man? A little off somebody is? Maybe? Drain and refill the torque convertor it may have leaked out and the damage may already be done!! They do not like air much at all and make sure you use the proper fluid for any transmission, Double, triple, quadruple check especially in this day and age with every maker seemingly having their own blend!! A good thing to have on any Auto tranny is a digital temp gauge, If you saw how hot they get sitting in the drive thru or even at a light you may put it in neutral!! Not to mention towing, or off roading especially if you have bigger tires. The temp goes up pretty quickly, the 50 bucks for a gauge is worth it if it saves you a trip to the tranny shop!!
yea , lucky could be, tow every day with it, have changed fluid filter at least once a year, some years 2x, depending on mileage. has cooler on it, keeping fingers crossed, hoping 4 lots more mileage......if ever change will go with upgraded ones.
